She was thinking all these things as she got ready. The sun was beginning to dip as she was leaving, creating red streaks across the sky and bathing the world in a deep orange glow. It looked truly beautiful, but now whenever she looked at the sky her gaze always drifted up to the stars, to their spaceship.
Chapter 9
L eslie managed to use one of the expensive purses she'd bought but never yet used. This was just a casual drink, not a date, she was adamant about that, so she didn't wear anything too ostentatious. She kept it simple by pulling her long brown hair back into a ponytail and wearing simple stud earrings. She wore a blue blouse that buttoned up to the bottom of her neck, and a dark ankle length skirt. She wore heels, for Jack was far taller than her so, she wanted to get as close to his height as possible when they were standing together, but it felt like she was wearing a costume, ready to put on a performance, because her true reality wasn't on Earth, it was up there in the stars.
“I'll see you when I get back,” she said before she stepped out of her apartment, hoping that she would be taken again that night.
Nerves jangled inside her when she stepped into the bar. She kept telling herself that it wasn't a date but it didn't stop her from feeling like it was. It had been a long time since she had met a man in a bar for a drink, and part of her was almost tempted to turn around. She did not, however, and Jack was waiting for her at a table in the corner.
The bar looked old and authentic. Thick wooden pillars held up the roof, and behind the bar stood a man with a thick beard. At the far end of the bar a few people played pool, and the heavy sound of a ball being sunk into the pockets echoed through the bar. It was fairly empty though, and the two of them were tucked away into a corner. Behind them there was a stage with a karaoke machine and some instruments. Upon seeing the karaoke machine Leslie's eyes widened in horror.
“Not a singer?” Jack asked with an amused smile on his face.
“Not a performer,” Leslie asked, then blushed as she thought about how she performed for the tall whites, how she loved the fact that they watched her while she was having sex with the two other aliens. She tried to shake it from her mind though for there was no place for it there. Not with Jack. Not in this normal place on Earth.
Jack pulled out a chair and gestured for her to sit down.
“So you're having trouble with Steve?” she asked.
“Just a little. It's no big deal. There are just sometimes when he gets a little crazy.”
“Crazy how?” Leslie asked, suddenly concerned for Sharee. As if reading her mind, Jack laughed and made a calming gesture with his hands.
“Don't worry, it's nothing too bad, I just mean in the context of writing. He gets a bit worked up and if we stay together we end up snapping at each other. We just need some time apart. Did you speak to Sharee today? From what I hear the two of them got on pretty well last night.”
“No, I haven't had a chance yet,” Leslie said, although she was surprised that Sharee hadn't even sent her a text message. Usually she was good at that sort of thing. “But I'm glad they had fun. Sharee's been through a lot. She could use some happiness in her life.”
“Couldn't we all,” Jack said, and raised his glass in a toast to that sentiment. Leslie raised hers too and the two glasses clinked. She drank some white wine, while Jack had half a pint of beer. The foam left a thin mustache over his upper lip, which was quickly swept away with a deft flick of his tongue.
“But the film is going well?”
“Oh yeah, we're just fine tuning the script now. There are always little bits here and there that people want us to change but it's been okay. Before we got into this we heard a lot of horror stories about meddling people who changed the entire concept of the story, but thankfully our producers have trusted us and we've been able to keep things pretty much as we want them to be. I don't know if that will hold true once we get to the point where it's released, but right now it's looking encouraging.”
“So was it difficult to write from the point of view of an alien?”
“A little,” Jack said, thinking about it, “but we wanted to put forward the idea that actually aliens aren't all that different from us, that just as mathematics can be a universal truth, so can things like love, empathy, and compassion.”
“But she's not aware of these things when she first comes to Earth?”
“Well, I don't want to spoil the story for you,” he said, his eyes twinkling, “but no, she’s not. She has to learn. But I think everyone in the universe has the capacity for love. I think it goes beyond biology. It was interesting to get into her head though. I had to think about what an alien would do, and how they'd go about making contact with Earth.”
“How does she make contact? Does she just come down and walk among us?”
“No, first she scouts. I wanted to get away from the idea that all aliens are seeking to invade us.”
“So, you don't think they're all bad?”
“No, not at all, just like not all humans are bad. I think if there are aliens out there they're probably just as complex as us, although I'd hope that they have a more stable society. But I also think that we shouldn't be scared of them. They're probably just like us, seeking for truth in the endless universe, and like the point of the film is, we probably have more in common than we have different.”
“Do you think aliens are out there?” she said, licking her lips, measuring Jack for his response. She wasn't going to reveal the truth to him but it felt good to be able to talk about her experiences without actually talking about them.
“I think so, I mean, the universe is so big, there has to be, right? I don't know if we'll ever meet any in our lifetime, and maybe we've got our timing all wrong and all the aliens are still yet to evolve on their own planets, but either way I think they've got to be out there, and maybe they just don't find us that interesting. But I do think if they eventually make it all the way out here, they'll want to talk. I can't imagine them just wanting to conquer us. What could they need us for?”
“Maybe the people,” Leslie said absently.
“Maybe, in some ways we are Earth's most precious resource. But I do like to think about what they'd do if they did come to Earth. I mean, for all we know they're smart enough to stay out of our way and they're just up there looking down on us, watching us like we're in a zoo. But hey, nobody wants to hear about my crazy theories.”
“They're not so crazy,” Leslie said softly, and then smiled, pretending that she was just being polite, but she had to be careful with what she said to Jack for she didn't want to give him any inkling of the truth.
“Thank you for saying so. I guess you can tell I've been single for a while,” he said, and laughed again. His laugh was warm and resonant, like a winter blanket that wrapped around her and made her feel safe. His self-deprecating manner appealed to her and the fact that he was himself without any pretensions made him more attractive, and she really did wonder why he was single. Most of the men she met had always tried to be something they weren't, or they had just been honest assholes. She wished that Jack hadn't been as nice as he was. “What about you anyway, what do you think about the whole alien thing?”
“Oh I don't know, I guess I've never really thought about it to be honest. I like the thought that we're not alone in the universe, but I don't think we'll ever really know, so I haven't spent much time thinking about it,” she lied. She wished she didn't find it so easy to lie to him.
“That's very pragmatic of you,” he said, and then the two of them moved on to talk more about his writing and her past, not that she had much of a past to talk about. The hours passed quickly for his company was comfortable and it was easy to be lulled into a free-flowing conversation. When she checked the time, she was startled and almost fell out of her chair. She didn't dare be home late in case she missed them again. She couldn't imagine their confusion if they came to her room and found that she wasn't there.
“I'm sorry Jack but I really have to go
. This was – this was great, really, it was really fun, I'll see you later,” she said, and before Jack could say anything in reply Leslie had sprinted out of the bar. The tires of her car screeched and she sped home.
Chapter 10
W hen she was inside she breathed a sigh of relief as once again she was in her room with the stars twinkling outside and somewhere up there were the tall whites, waiting to bring her home. She got into the bed as quickly as she could and hoped that she hadn't angered them by her actions. She breathed slowly and thought about them, pushing away her evening with Jack. It had been pleasant but it had been a mistake. She shouldn't see him again. It was a bad idea. Even if she tried to say that they would stay friends she didn't know how long that would last. He was so charming and so handsome and it was so easy to talk to him, she was afraid that either she would fall for him or he would fall for her. Or worse: they would fall for each other. But the closer she got to him the more likely it was that she would let something slip, and the easier it would be for her to make a mistake and what she had with the tall whites was sacred. It was bigger than her, bigger than everything she was. She could talk about plans all she wanted but really the only plan that mattered was the one the tall whites had for her. Their plan had been years in the making, probably long before they had even arrived on Earth. It was a web, with many strands of which she was not even aware, but she was one of those strands, one of the most integral ones and she was not going to forsake them.
Leslie was willing to give herself to the tall whites. It was her duty, her privilege to serve them. They could give her something no human could. Even if she wouldn't be able to talk about it she could still know in her heart that she was special, an honorary member of their race, and in a way James was right. She would be a bridge between humans and the aliens, just not in the way he wanted. Maybe this was for the best of both species, maybe humans could use a little alien DNA in the genetic cocktail to improve them and make them better, maybe this would be the way for humans to reach their potential and spread out into the stars.
To think of it filled Leslie with such excitement and she was proud to be the first mother of alien/human hybrids. Closing her eyes, she thought to them, hoping they could read her thoughts. She begged for them to come down to her, to visit with her and take her back up so that she could be with them again. Then, slowly, she felt sleep come upon her. Gradually her body grew heavier and her breaths became longer and deeper, and as the moon hung outside Leslie fell asleep.
In the middle of the night Leslie stirred. A bright, white light filled the room. Before her, appearing as if out of nowhere, were two tall angels. Their blonde hair seemed to glow, and as they moved they seemed to shimmer. Half-asleep, she wasn't sure if this was a dream at first, but as she felt their long fingers curl around her body and pull her up she knew that it was real, and she smiled. They pulled her into the warm light and she felt baptized. Her head fell against the nape of their neck and then the light glowed even more brightly, before it blinked and then she knew the transportation had taken place.
Their technology was something she couldn't comprehend, although she knew that Jack would most likely have freaked out if he knew all they could do. She was on the table like usual. The two tall whites stood in front of her while the other scientists watched on. They jostled each other, trying to get a better view. Leslie looked at all of them watching her. It filled her with arousal. They were in their alien forms, but the two in front of her were human. They were her usual partners. Somehow, she could tell them apart even though they all looked so similar. The tall whites had thin, hairless bodies with huge dark eyes that looked like obsidian orbs. Their heads rose forming a cone that was swept back. Their mouth was a thin line, and their nose consisted of just two small holes in the middle of their face. Similarly their ears were slits in the side of their heads. Their fingers were long and thin, and Leslie couldn't help but imagine what it would feel like to have one of them inside her.
The thought scared her.
It was one thing to be aroused by aliens in human form, but something else to be aroused by the aliens themselves. Yet, it was exciting. Leslie knew that she was the only woman to have been in this position, and she was curious to see what her children would look like, the ones birthed from this unique combination of hybrid DNA.
Do you know what you have to do? A voice asked, as clear in her mind as if it had been spoken.
I understand. I will do whatever you need. Whatever you want. I am yours. She thought back. She knew what she needed to do. She needed to teach them, to show them the erotic arts so that they could seduce human women and take them to bed. The aliens themselves had no idea of the sensual aspect of love. She wondered if they ever had that knowledge, if it was something that had been lost to them over the centuries, or if it had never been a part of their culture. She remembered the other times they had had sex with her. It had been mechanical, and while she had been seized by passion she hadn't sensed the same reaction from the others, and she made it her mission to get them to show her that deep inside there was a part of them that needed sex. If Jack was right then these aliens would understand love and they would take to her lessons easily, for it would be a universal truth.
There were so many questions she wanted to ask them but she knew she would not get the answers. She was there to service them, and for the moment that was what she was committed to do. Hopefully in time the answers would present themselves and she would be given knowledge no human had ever been given before.
Let it begin. The voice said. She glanced towards the head scientist and smiled. He looked at her with an inscrutable expression on her face. She was sitting on the edge of the table, like always. There was a shelf at the end upon which she could rest her feet. The table was hard, clinical. It was almost like a medical table. She remembered the times when she had been examined by gynecologists. There had always been something familiar about it, something strangely arousing, and she had never been able to figure out what it was until her memories had been returned to her.
The walls were white, so it was difficult to get a sense of exactly how big the room was. There were no windows that she could see either. She didn't know if this was true for the whole ship or just this room, but she wished she could see out into space once, just to get a glimpse of the stars and maybe Earth from afar. The scientists were encroaching closer, unable to stay away. She remembered the last time when they had all joined in, when one of the scientists had been so excited by the act of pleasuring Leslie that he had ejaculated early, and been suitably chastised for doing so. Their goal was to impregnate women. This was a mission. Not a vacation. It was a strange way to look at sex and Leslie was eager to know what their end goal was. The head scientist seemed to be a tough taskmaster and was dedicated to his mission, and she wondered how old he was. She imagined him to be the eldest here, as for the others she couldn't tell. Seeing how eager they were she imagined them to be quite young, but that was only guesswork on her part.
Stop. You are here to learn. Do not involve yourselves. The thought was clear to her but she knew that he wasn't talking to her. The other scientists bowed their heads and their feet stopped shuffling. They stayed in a line a few feet away from the table. Leslie was impressed by the discipline of them, and by how quick the head scientist was to react. She wondered if he found the entire thing arousing as well or if he just wanted them to learn as quickly as possible so they could get on with their mission. But with the art of love, things could not be taken quickly. Leslie knew that for sure. She summoned everything she knew in her mind and breathed deeply. Her hands relaxed against the table, and she leaned back. She wasn't wearing her nightdress any longer, she was in a medical gown, which was hardly flattering. The two angels in front of her stood still. They looked at each other. The one on the right moved forward. She didn't know their names yet, and wondered even if she did if she could actually pronounce them. For all she knew they were a collection of unintelligible syllab
les, so in her own mind she gave names to them. One was Gabriel, the other was Michael. They were golden and warm.
Gabriel reached out and grabbed her arm. His grip was a little tight, so much so that Leslie winced a little. Gabriel instantly skipped back, removing his arm.
“It's okay,” Leslie said, “a little pain is good, but you have to know when it’s.” She took Gabriel's hand back and placed it on her shoulder. He moved in between her thighs and parted her legs. His touch was warm, and her body tingled. She shivered with pleasure as his hand moved up her inner thigh and his blue eyes gazed down at her body, fascinated by her femininity. She saw his erection bulge through his jumpsuit and she knew he wanted to get down to business but she was there too much teach them, and she knew that no Earth woman would think that their husband was that mechanical.
