  WILL

They must’ve gone to the end.

Four pulls THE FLAG from his pocket. It’s a phosphorescent GLOWING triangle.

  FOUR

Alright. Lights off. Gather around, come on. So what’s your strategy?

  AL

Hide the flag well enough they can’t find it.

  WILL

Send out a team to scout their location, see if we can find their flag.

While the others argue, Tris looks around, taking stock of the surroundings. She knows this is her last chance.

  EZRA

I say we blitz’em, just beat them with sheer force. . .

Tris’ gaze lands on the Ferris Wheel. Unnoticed, she heads off into the darkness.

EXT. NAVY PIER - FERRIS WHEEL - NIGHT

Tris looks up at the rusting spokes towering above her. . . There’s an iron ladder attached to one of the support struts. She starts TO CLIMB IT.

  FOUR (O.S.)

  Not gonna jump, are you?

She looks back at him but keeps going.

  TRIS

No, I’m just trying to get a good vantage point.

  FOUR

  Good thinking.

He starts up the ladder after her.

  TRIS

You don’t have to come with me.

  FOUR

You should go easy, you took a beating.

  TRIS

I’m surprised you noticed. I saw you leave during the fight.

  FOUR

Wasn’t something I wanted to watch.

  She takes that in.

They continue climbing. He’s right behind her.

She moves faster to keep ahead of him. . . HER FOOT SLIPS and she FALLS to one side. Four’s hand clamps down around one of her hips, restoring her balance.

She reacts to his touch, like electricity.

  FOUR (CONT’D)

  You okay?

  TRIS

  I’m fine. . .

  She nods, keeps climbing.

  FOUR

  This is high enough.

Tris stops to look at him. He’s breathing hard.

  TRIS

No, we need to go higher.

She looks at him; he’s pale, clenching the bars.

  TRIS (CONT’D)

  You alright?

  (realizing, amazed)

  You’re afraid of heights.

  FOUR

  Everyone’s afraid of something.

  He doesn’t deny it.

  TRIS

I didn’t think you were afraid of anything.

He shrugs. They reach the hub at the center of the wheel.

And starts up, climbing the open structure of the Ferris Wheel.

  FOUR

Come on, Tris. Really? Are you even human?

She reaches a perch and stops. He climbs up next to her. They’re both breathing hard, their hands almost touching as they clutch the steel supports. . .

Their closeness makes Tris nervous. She fills the silence.

  TRIS

  This isn’t so bad.

  FOUR

  Yeah.

They look into each other’s eyes. She studies his face. He manages a slight smile. She almost forgets where she is.

Then she SPOTS SOMETHING out of the corner of her eye.

HER P.O.V.: a faint phosphorous GLOW in one of the far towers above the rotunda.

  TRIS

  Look. There it is.

  She smiles.

  CUT TO:

  EXT. NAVY PIER - LATER

Four and Tris run down the pier with the group in tow.

  FOUR

  Alright, what’s your plan?

  TRIS

We split into two groups. We’ll go up this side to give us enough time to engage Eric.

  EXT. NAVY PIER - LATER

They’ve split into TWO SQUADS. Tris’s squad - with Four, Will, Christina and Al - goes through the door. Tris leads, nodding to the others to follow her once she’s in.

  INT. FUN HOUSE - NIGHT

Tris and her group creep through the abandoned carnival attractions. Enter a HOUSE OF MIRRORS. Move past distorted and cracked reflections of themselves. Come to

A STAIRWELL. Climb it to the

  EXT. ROOFTOP - CONTINUOUS

The towers are above them, rising from the opposite side of the flat roof.

  SUDDENLY, GUNFIRE.

The other squad has engaged the enemy. A chaotic firefight. TRACER DARTS zip through the air. Initiates howl in pain as they’re hit.

Tris and Four exchange a nod. . .

He and Will head out and attack the enemy flank. Four moves like water, shooting as he goes. He catches sight of Eric . . . and DROPS HIM. Tris sees and smiles.

  TRIS AND CHRISTINA

Head for the door at the base of the Tower. Unseen, they slip quietly between massive old mechanical units.

Christina turns a corner, comes face to face with . . . PETER.

He smiles, holding TWO GUNS on her. Nothing she can do.

  PETER

  Tell me if this hurts.

He starts to squeeze the triggers. . .

  TRIS (O.C.)

  You tell me.

She’s right behind him. He spins but it’s too late. SHE SHOOTS HIM.

His face contorts in pain and he DROPS BOTH GUNS.

  PETER

  You bitch --

  Christina shoots him again.

  CHRISTINA

  That was awesome.

Tris and Christina head for the tower door. Go in.

INT. TOWER - STAIRWELL - CONTINUOUS

Tris bounds up the narrow stairs. Christina guards.

  BELLFRY

They reach the top, push open the hatch. Fight the remaining guard: Molly. Too close to shoot so it’s hand to hand. Tris stuns Molly with a blow to the stomach. She goes down.

  EXT. BELLFRY - MOMENTS LATER

Tris and Christina lean out the window and UNFURL THE ENEMY FLAG. They’ve won. A cheer goes up from her team below.

  EXT. NAVY PIER - NIGHT

The squads are heading back, tired but jubilant. A DAUNTLESS team member Ezra, with a group of Dauntless born, comes up next to Tris.

  EZRA

  Hey, Tris, come with us.

  TRIS

  Where?

  EZRA

Shortcut back. Little initiation ritual. Dauntless-style.

She looks back at Four as they pull her along with them.

  CUT TO:

INT. HANCOCK BUILDING - STAIRWELL - NIGHT

The SOUND of BOOTS running up stairs and we’re seeing a mess of legs as the initiates climb and climb.

EXT. HANCOCK BUILDING - ROOF - NIGHT

Tris and the others burst out onto the roof. Tris takes in the insane view of the entire city from so high up.

She sees there are other Dauntless already up there. She turns to Ezra.

  TRIS

  Where’s the shortcut?

She’s interrupted by a SCREAM as A GUY flies off the edge of the roof. He’s in a harness connected to a 2000 FOOT ZIPLINE.

EXT. HANCOCK BUILDING - ROOF - LATER

Now it’s Tris’ turn. Ezra hooks her up. She looks out into the darkness but the zip line just disappears into a black void.

  EZRA

  You ready?

  She nods.

  DAUNTLESS MAN

Don’t forget to pull the brake at the bottom.

HE SHOVES HER OFF, over the edge, into

  THE AIR ABOVE CHICAGO

She hurtles down the cable, picking up speed. The sensation is amazing, and terrifying. Huge glass buildings fly by on either side.

Up ahead, A BUILDING DAMAGED IN THE WAR still has A GAPING HOLE in it. The cable goes right through it . . . and so does Tris. She SHOUTS with glee.

But now she’s starting to go TOO FAST. She shakes so much the world becomes a blur.

EXT. ZIP LINE LANDING ZONE - NIGHT

The ground is fast approaching but she’s not slowing down. A bui
lding up ahead has A HUGE TARGET painted on it. Huge splatter marks stain the target, and that’s what she’s going to be if she doesn’t stop. . .

  VARIOUS DAUNTLESS

  Pull up the brake!

She pulls up the break at the last second, and she’s yanked to a stop just before hitting the wall.

She hangs there, just short of the target, ten feet up, winded and exhilarated. The crowd below cheers.

  INT. PIT - NIGHT

Tris is surrounded by friends, in her element as they make their way back to the dorm.

She sees him near the Chasm with some other instructors. She breaks off from the group.

  FOUR

  Congratulations.

  TRIS

  Thanks.

  FOUR

You know, I wanted to say that you were really good tonight. You were brave.

He looks like he wants to reveal something else, then.

  FOUR (CONT’D)

  (beat)

Anyway, you should get back to your friends.

  He turns to go.

  DIVERGENT DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What purpose does each of the five factions serve in society? What personality types are drawn toward each faction? Do you think these factions represent every basic personality type and fulfill all the basic needs of people? If not, what faction(s) would you create to fill in any gaps?

  2. What was the reason behind the creation of the factions? Do you think the factions are working “toward a better society and a better world” as they say they are? What about the structure seems to be working for Tris’s society? What doesn’t seem to be working at all?

  3. What faction do you think you would have been born into, given your family and its values? Which faction would you select at your Choosing Ceremony? Why? How would you feel about making a decision that would determine your life’s course at the age of sixteen?

  4. What choices have you made that have changed you? What future choices will you also make, and how do you think that they will change you?

  5. How does the idea of “faction before blood” come into play throughout the book? Do you think this idea has a place in today’s society, or is it contrary to what most people believe? In our society, what ideas and beliefs are people loyal to in the way Tris’s society is loyal to the concept of the factions?

  6. Why is Tris’s government run only by members of Abnegation? Do you think this is a good idea? Do you agree with her father’s statement that “valuing knowledge above all else results in a lust for power, and that leads men into dark and empty places”? Why or why not?

  7. What does it mean to be factionless in Tris’s society? How does a person become factionless?

  8. Tris says about Candor, “It must require bravery to be honest all the time.” Do you agree? Which do you think is a braver faction, Dauntless or Candor? Would you like to live in a society like Candor, where everyone tells the truth no matter how hard it is to hear?

  9. During initiation, is it selfish of Tris to crave victory, or is it brave? Do Tris’s friends have a right to be jealous when she’s ranked above them? If you were Tris, would you forgive them for their reactions?

  10. How does initiation change and transform Tris? Do you think she made the right faction choice? How do you think she might have changed if she had chosen one of the other factions?

  11. What is the difference between being fearless and learning to control your fears? Do you believe anyone can be truly fearless? What does Tris mean when she says that “half of bravery is perspective”?

  12. Is Four’s desire to be “brave, and selfless, and smart, and kind, and honest” realistic in the society in which he lives? Think of examples of people in our own world who successfully bridge different cultures, perspectives, or ways of living.

  13. Tris’s mom says, “Human beings as a whole cannot be good for long before the bad creeps back in and poisons us again.” Do you agree or disagree? Why?

  14. At the beginning of the book, Tris does not understand what it means to be Divergent. How do you think she would explain it by the end of the book?
