  “Claire? Uh…. is everything alright?”

  I heard my mother’s voice in the very near background and it didn’t sound the way it normally sounded. I turned to Camille and almost burst out laughing.

  “What?” she whispered.

  “Um… everything is fine, Dad. I just wanted to tell you some good news but it can wait until morning.”

  “Okay then. Good night.”

  “You too-” I said, but he’d already hung up. I looked at Camille. “I think my parents might have been…”

  Camille began to laugh. “Well, we tried.”

  “We did,” I said.

  She took my hand and we went and sat around the fire with the rest of the group. Camille leaned her back against the log and I nested myself between her legs. She wrapped her arms around me and held my hands. The tips of her fingers slid gently over my ring.

  Sherri and Jarrett came and sat down beside us. Sherri looked over at me and smiled. “We did well.”

  “I know,” I agreed.

  “Who knew, hey?” she said, smiling as she turned and gazed into the orange glow of the fire.

  Perhaps neither of us had expected to be where we were at that moment, sitting beside each other and wrapped inside the arms of our true loves. Years had passed and yet we were still only at the beginning. Our futures were as wide open as the ocean, calling us into the unknown.

  Camille kissed me softly; her breath warmed the side of my neck. Fourteen months together and we were back where we had started, with a different cast of friends but on the same beach, overlooking the same water.

  I was committed to her more than I ever thought I could be to anyone. I loved her more than I ever thought it was possible to love. All the nights I’d spent questioning whether she would ever be mine were behind us. That story had ended and a bigger one had just begun.
