No one knows he’s my step-brother. We’ve hid our connection for years—even before either of us moved out of the house. I doubt anyone would believe it, even if we revealed it now, but that’s why I can’t see him.

Fear enveloped her, but she agreed to Peter’s idea anyway. When she hung up the phone, her stomach wrapped around in knots, and she wondered what she’d just gotten herself into.

  Chapter Five

At the end of the evening, which ended a lot later than usual for Emily as she was constantly keeping up with both her work as well as that of Peter, her hands trembled as she straightened the paperwork in her hand. Peter was right. She knew the material as well as, if not better than, he did, but that didn’t stop her stomach from doing flip-flops as she took the elevator up to the top floor.

She fiddled with the papers in her hand, reading and re-reading the same lines she’d seen over and over again for the past couple of weeks. It didn’t help matters any. She was nervous. There was no denying it.

I don’t even know what he’s been doing these past couple of years. She knew she would if she ever went to the backyard barbeques her mother planned with Sam. It was always her mother’s way of trying to hook Emily up though, so she’d avoided them like the plague, always having plans that day. Now there would be no escaping the next one, and she’d see Justin because he always went to them.

Now it looked like she was going to see him before then. It was part of the reason she’d stayed so late as well, waiting until well after everyone had gone home for the evening. She knew if she waited long enough, even Justin would be gone for the evening. Then she’d be able to leave the papers on his desk with a note that Peter would explain them later, and she could tell Peter she’d delivered them but Justin was already gone for the evening.

That was her goal at least.

The elevator opened with a ding, admitting her to the corporate level of the building. Offices lined a long hallway, ending at the end where Justin Price’ office resided. She stepped out of the elevator and waited for it to close. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying to quell the nerves fluttering in her stomach like butterflies. This would not do. She could not face Justin, if she were to face him at all, feeling like this.

That was always how he made her react though. She felt like she was back in high school, staring at him across the cafeteria, a dreamy sigh slipping from her mouth as she watched him with his friends. He’d always been cooler than her, smarter than her, and sexier than her. Then his father had married her mother though, destroying all her hopes that her fantasy of him might ever come true.

Living with him had been hard, but knowing she couldn’t touch him as other girls did, knowing she couldn’t kiss him as other girls did, knowing she couldn’t look at him as other girls did, drove her insane. It was one of the reasons she never dated. Other men just didn’t equate to the way Justin Price made her feel, and she would not attempt to try anything that might lead them to think otherwise.

Of course, she’d dated a few times, even had sex with a couple of Justin’s high school friends long after they’d all graduated and parted ways, but it had been casual one-night stands that left both partners satisfied but not at all gratified to try again.

Emily sighed and walked down the long hall, glad her heels didn’t clack against the floor. It was spooky enough being on this hall without the added measure of the sound of her heels. As she neared the end of the hall though, other sounds besides those of her heels against the floor called her attention, forcing her to look up with curiosity.

Hasn’t everyone left for the day? I could have sworn I would have been the last one here.

That didn’t stop the incoherent sounds she heard, muffled through the door at the end of the hall. The closer she walked, the more she heard though. Although muffled, there was no mistaking the loud moans and groans echoing around the room inside.

For a moment, Emily froze, unsure of what to do. However, she also remembered the conversation she’d overheard that day. Justin was screwing Bethany. Was he? Was he really fucking the woman from accounting?

Blind rage filtered through her for a moment, but then she took a deep breath and released it. Her anger seeped from her. Justin was a playboy. There was no denying that. What did it matter if he was screwing around with women from work anyway?

She paused at the door, torn between embarrassment and curiosity. Part of her wanted to run. Another part of her wanted to peek inside the room and see who was inside.

“Just—!” the scream was cut off, giving way to a loud groan. Emily didn’t recognize that voice, but she could tell the woman had just come. She heard the slap of skin against skin and felt her own desire pool within her belly. She grew damp between her legs and her knees quaked.

Her curiosity and desire won out. She wanted—no, needed—to know who was in the room. Who was Justin fucking? Bethany? Someone else?

The door wasn’t latched all the way, and she was glad the doors in the building were kept well-oiled. Neither person in the room heard her push open the door and peek in. There was no mistaking the two people in the room, one a woman and the other a man.

The woman, who Emily recognized as Bethany, was pressed down upon Justin’s large desk, her ass in the air and her dress pulled up around her waist. Emily couldn’t see her underwear—if she had even been wearing any. Who knew where they were.

Behind her, Justin’s well-muscled chest glistened with sweat, his white shirt unbuttoned. His hands were on Bethany’s hips, pulling her back to meet his every thrust, and his pants were bunched in a pile around his feet. His teeth were gritted as he rammed himself in and out of the woman spread before him, facing Emily but not even glancing at her. Bethany was blind to Emily’s appearance as well, but for other reasons. Emily quickly saw that her eyes were covered with what looked like a sleep mask.

That confused Emily for a moment, but then so did Justin’s being with Bethany in the first place. He’d always been a playboy, but she hadn’t thought all the rumors were true. Did he really sleep with everything on two legs?

Standing in the doorway and watching as he pumped himself into the woman before him, watching as she cried out in ecstasy as she came and he grunted harder and louder as he came closer to release himself, she couldn’t help but see the truth about the man she was secretly in love with. Justin was a player. He toyed with women’s emotions and fucked them when they fell for his charm, but it never lasted long. How long had he and Bethany been together? How much longer before he left her for someone else?

Emily wanted to turn away. She wanted to run. However, the sight before her captured her attention and held it like a vice. She stared, wetting her dry lips with her tongue even as she felt liquid heat pool in her underwear. She wanted to be the one with her legs wrapped around Justin’s body. She wanted to be the one moaning in pleasure as he gripped her hips and yanked her toward him.

A small whimper fell from her lips.

Justin’s dark eyes fell upon her, capturing her gaze. At that moment, he came, groaning as he filled the woman underneath him, but his gaze never left Emily’s. Her eyes widened and her face brightened with embarrassment, at the idea of being caught. She couldn’t move though. It felt as if she was a mouse caught in a snake’s hypnotizing gaze.

“This certainly is a surprising development,” Justin said with a smirk. The papers in Emily’s hand fell to the ground as she gasped in horror.

“What is it?” Bethany asked, gasping for breath and reaching up to take off her blindfold.

Justin’s hands grasped hers before she could succeed. “It’s nothing, babe,” he soothed her. He finally turned his eyes from Emily, freeing her from his gaze.

Emily took one step back, turned on her heels and fled down the hall as if there was someone chasing after her.
