Christmas is in the Air

by Cary Morgan-Frates

The congregation laughed and Winterson added, “I don’t think he expected any of this when he issued that invitation, but I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.”

He cleared his throat and adopted a clergyman’s solemn tone. “It is my great privilege to announce the first marriage banns not only between Miss Amanda Fleming and Cameron Hunt, the ninth Earl of St. Cloud, but also those of Lady Perdita Hunt and Mr. Stephen Fleming. If there be any impediment to these unions, I charge ye here in the name of heaven to name and declare it now.”

In the following silence, and half expecting the triumvirate to try to get in one last word, Amanda’s heart hammered so hard it hurt to breathe. But the warmth of Cam’s hand in hers acted like a balm, soothing her fears and she turned to smile at him. His solemn expression was suitable for church, but his eyes twinkled with loving approval. “Happy?” he whispered, kissing her cheek.

“Only my wedding day will make me happier,” she said.

“Soon, my love,” he whispered again, squeezing her hand. “Very, very soon.”

“Well, since there are no objections,” Winterson said, “Stephen, come up here so we can start the service. That is, after you’ve taken your fiancée to her place in the choir.”

From across the aisle, a vested Stephen rose and led Perdita toward the front of the church. But then she whirled around, love and excitement lighting up her face.

“I say, Cam!” she cried. “Didn’t I tell you this was going to be a cracking good Christmas?”

The congregation laughed again, and a grinning Stephen called out, “Wives! Whatever will we do with them?”

“Love them!” Cam shouted back as the music started and the choir filed in. “And have a cracking good time!”
