  ‘Good,’ said Squidge.

‘It’s funny, because the whole thing with her started after that game of Truth, Dare, Kiss or Promise,’ I said. ‘Remember on Valentine’s Day, when Becca told us all we had to kiss someone and she told me I had to kiss Jonno?’

Squidge’s face clouded for a moment. ‘Oh yeah, your leading man. How’s that going?’

‘Ah. I think I’m going to do a recast. I’m the director of my movie. I can do that, can’t I?’

Squidge smiled again. ‘Sure. Does Jonno know that he’s been made redundant yet?’

I shook my head. ‘Haven’t written the dialogue for that scene yet, but I’m going to work on it over the next few days and tell him next time I see him.’

After this evening, I was more sure than ever that I had to end it with Jonno. I’d only been with Squidge a short while, but he was so interesting. He really thought about things. And not one mention of football.

‘But forget Jonno for a moment. Thinking back to Valentine’s night, you never fulfilled the kiss dare. You said you were going to do it in your own time.’

Squidge was quiet for a moment. ‘I will when the time is right.’

I really wanted him to kiss me, like I’ve never felt before. ‘And when do you think that will be?’

Squidge did this amazing thing. He smiled with his eyes, then he looked at the floor. ‘Right girl, right time,’ he said, then looked up into my eyes. ‘You can’t hurry it. It’s like an avocado pear – if you bite into it too soon, it doesn’t taste as good as when it’s ripened.’

I felt my stomach flip over. If he’d been waiting for me, then I was ready. No doubt about it – I’d never felt this way about a boy, ever – not even Ollie’s friend, Michael. This felt different. Special. I felt so alive. Hyper, like I’d drunk ten cups of coffee, yet strangely calm at the same time. Life is what you make it, Squidge had said. You make the choices about how you want your movie to turn out. Well, I choose not to be so timid any more, I thought. I want a more fun role in my own film. But is he ready to play the next scene? As Squidge continued to look into my eyes, I wondered how to speed up the process.

‘Well, winter’s over,’ I said. ‘Spring is on its way, then summer. Good times for things to ripen, I’d say.’

I took a deep breath, took a step towards him and gently put my arms around his neck. He slid his hands around my waist and pulled me close, then . . .

Cue slushy soundtrack as the camera pulls away to fade out.

  The End.

Well, it’s my film. I can do that. And I think most people can guess what happened next. . .
