  “You ain't gon’ shoot me. This ain't your type of shit. We’re in the middle of a fucking nice ass neighborhood with an endless supply of potential witnesses. You’re smarter than that, so you might as well hear me out,” Laken said, holding his hand further out to the side.

  He was right, but at this point I was so pissed I figured I might actually take a chance on it. Shit, I could pay people off if I needed to, and if they didn't cooperate, I had no problem taking lives to protect mine.

  “There you go with that shit again. Why the fuck do you think I’m interested in anything that you have to say. All I’m interested in is putting a bullet in your bitch ass.”

  Laken’s ass laughed and then folded his arms across his chest. The movement almost made me pull the trigger.

  “Cause we family, nigga. That’s why.”

  “Blood don't make you family, loyalty does, so you ain't shit to me, believe that, cuz.”

  Again, this nigga laughed. “I’m loyal. Shit, I didn't murk your ass tonight when I could have, and I ain't your cousin, nigga. I’m your brother.”

  The smug grin on his face had my pulse racing. I was inches away from pulling the trigger until I heard Nonie's voice.

  She yelled my name with so much intensity I looked away from Laken, expecting her to be looking at me but her eyes were in another direction. I made the mistake of following them to see what had her shook, and the next thing I knew, I heard gun shots. A piercing pain shoot through my chest and arm as I stumbled back. I managed to fire my gun just before I heard Nonie scream again, and then I heard Laken yell.

  “The fuck did you do that shit for?” was the last thing I heard him say before hearing another round of shots and my body collapsing onto the ground.

  My hand went over my chest and my eyes closed to the sound of someone yelling, “Get back, get the fuck back.”
