Frost Fire

“No, we were destined to be together.”

Mydon sighed. “Then you should take her back home with us.”

  “I intend to.”

Although Molly hadn’t agreed yet, Blaze had every hope of changing her mind. Once the chaos started, she’d be more amenable to seeing things his way. Luckily, he still had time to convince her, unless the earthly humans came up with their own solution, of course.

Mydon sighed. “What’s it like? Being mated?”

Blaze considered the question. “I suppose you could say it’s a form of insanity, my entire universe revolves around another person.”

  “Explain.”

“When I’m with her...” He closed his eyes. “I know peace when her hand is in mine.”

  “It sounds…wonderful.”

“It is. I hope you find your mate as well.” Who knows? Maybe she’d be a gentling influence, and Mydon would be less of an egotistical bastard.

Then again, one mustn’t expect miracles.

“Perhaps you were right earlier.” Mydon swaggered to the door.

  “About what?”

  “Fate.”

  Epilogue

“Can you show me your star?”

Molly tipped her head back, staring at the twinkling lights overhead. She’d always loved space, been fascinated by it, actually.

How could anything so beautiful be deadly?

They were standing in the backyard at the inn, wrapped in thick wool coats with mugs of hot coffee. Blaze kept tugging at the collar of his jacket, because he was warm, while she could use a couple of extra layers.

The immediate danger had ended, and Molly was faced with the next problem, which was bigger, and infinitely more complex, the destruction of the planet.

“It’s quite dim, but you can still see it.” He pointed at the night sky. Iradia’s sun barely twinkled in the velvety night.

“There’s so many, and all of these different worlds have life on them?” Molly leaned back against him, and he encircled her waist.

“Not all of them, of course. Some are merely barren rocks.”

Her breath hitched. “It’s coming, isn’t it?”

  “Yes.” Blaze sighed.

  “I still can’t…”

“I know.” Blaze clutched her closer and she calmed once more. “You could come with me.”

“What about my mother? My friends?” Leslie was still recovering from her ordeal, although she had no clue what had really happened to her, and Molly couldn’t bring herself to tell Leslie yet.

  “I know.”

  “I can’t lose them.”

“Maybe there’s another way out of this.”

“You think the Maelstrome will intervene?”

“I doubt it, but maybe the research project, the one with the black holes, will be a success.”

“Maybe.” But both ideas were longshots. “The good news is, I don’t have to decide right now.”

Thinking about this anymore was out of the question. For now, she had her mother back, and the next two years ahead of her, with Blaze at her side.

  They’d figure out the rest.

  Snow Fire is next.
