Bodies of Water

Page 11

by V. H. Leslie

Kirsten clutched Manon tightly by the shoulders. Hadn’t she said herself how wonderful it would be to belong to such a world? Maybe all anyone needs is a little push.

Kirsten felt the river loosen its grip and suddenly in front of them stood the woman with the long, wet hair. She opened her pale arms. Kirsten could feel Manon’s heart racing wildly.

It was only a little fall and Melusine was there to catch her.

The Wellcome Library’s extensive catalogue was invaluable in researching the Water Cure and nineteenth century ideas and practices associated with women’s health. Thanks are also due to my dear friend, Dr Tom Stammers for his historical guidance, to my agent, Johnny Mains, and Jen Hamilton-Emery for her editorial support. I am also indebted to the Saari Residence in Finland, maintained by the Kone Foundation, which provided serene and watery surroundings to finish the manuscript.
