  Veteran American TV director Don Medford (Donald Muller) died on December 12, aged 95. The prolific Medford helmed episodes of Tales of Tomorrow (35!), Alfred Hitchcock Presents (both 1960s and 1980s series), The Twilight Zone, the pilot for The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (released theatrically as To Trap a Spy), the pilot for Ghostbreakers (1967), The Invaders and Something is Out There, along with the 1978 TV movie The Clone Master.

  British puppeteer Violet Phelan Philpott (Violet Yeomans) died on December 14, aged 90. In the early 1960s she created the puppets for TV’s The Telegoons, based on the popular BBC Radio series The Goon Show, and in 1972 she created Zippy for the popular ITV children’s series Rainbow.

  American screenwriter and director Danny Steinmann (aka Danny Stone/Peter Foleg), died on December 18, aged 70. Best known for Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, he was an associate producer on the Gene Roddenberry pilot Spectre, and he co-wrote and directed The Unseen under the Foleg alias.

  British producer and writer Gerry Anderson MBE (Gerald Alexander Anderson) died of complications from Alzheimer’s disease on December 26, aged 83. Often in collaboration with his former wife Sylvia Anderson, he co-produced the puppet (Supermarionation) and live-action TV series The Adventures of Twizzle, Torchy the Battery Boy, Four Feather Falls, Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, U.F.O., Space: 1999, Terrahawks and Space Precinct. His other credits include the films Thunderbirds Are GO, Thunderbird 6 and Doppelgänger (aka Journey to the Far Side of the Sun).

  Oscar-winning New Zealand sound editor Mike Hopkins (Michael Alexander Hopkins) drowned in a rafting accident on December 30. He was 53. Hopkins’s credits include Death Warmed Up, Mr Wrong, Braindead, The Frighteners, Aberration, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Ring 2, King Kong (2005), Transformers and Fresh Meat.

  ORGANISATIONS

  The Australian Horror Writers Association (www.australianhorror.com) is a non-profit organisation that was formed in 2005 as a way of providing a unified voice and a sense of community for Australian (and New Zealand) writers of horror/dark fiction. AHWA aims to become the first point of reference for writers and fans of the dark side of literature in Australia, to spread the acceptance and improve the understanding of what horror is in literature to a wider audience, and in doing so gain a greater readership for established and new writers alike.   The British Fantasy Society (www.britishfantasysociety.org) was founded in 1971 and publishes the newsletter Prism and the magazines Dark Horizons and New Horizons, featuring articles, interviews and fiction, along with occasional special booklets. The BFS also enjoys a lively online community – there is an email news-feed, a discussion board with numerous links, and a Cyberstore selling various publications. FantasyCon is one of the UK’s friendliest conventions and there are social gatherings and meet-the-author events organised around Britain.   The Friends of Arthur Machen (www.arthurmachen.org.uk) is a literary society whose objectives include encouraging a wider recognition of Machen’s work and providing a focus for critical debate.   The Horror Writers Association (www.horror.org) is a world-wide organisation of writers and publishing professionals dedicated to promoting the interests of writers of Horror and Dark Fantasy. It was formed in the early 1980s. Interested individuals may apply for Active, Affiliate or Associate membership. Active membership is limited to professional writers. HWA publishes a monthly online Newsletter, and sponsors the annual Bram Stoker Awards.

  World Fantasy Convention (www.worldfantasy.org) is an annual convention held in a different (usually American) city each year, oriented particularly towards serious readers and genre professionals.

  World Horror Convention (www.worldhorrorsociety.org) is a smaller, more relaxed, event. It is aimed specifically at horror fans and professionals, and held in a different city (usually American) each year.
