‘Nick, does she know that we have sex?’
‘I think that’s her car now,’ he murmured, ignoring her question and moving to the window. ‘Yes, she’s home.’
‘Nick, does she know?’ Mandy persisted.
‘Put it this way. It’s best not to say anything.’
‘God, I wish you’d told me before. I might have said something to her earlier and …’
‘Our little secret, OK?’
‘OK.’
‘Hi,’ Jackie said, beaming as she breezed into the room. ‘Have you been a good little girl, Mandy?’
‘She’s been very good,’ Nick said. ‘She’s had her nappy changed and she’s ready for dinner.’
‘Thanks, Dad. Well, the car’s all done.’
‘No problems?’
‘No, everything’s fine.’
‘Good, good. I’ll make you a cup of tea,’ he said, leaving the room.
‘Are you happy?’ Jackie asked Mandy, sitting next to her on the sofa. ‘I mean, is everything OK?’
‘Things couldn’t be better,’ Mandy said, kissing the girl’s full lips. ‘Your dad looks after me, you love me … Things couldn’t be better. Oh, I must take you to meet my mum and dad.’
‘Yes, I’d like that. Do you think they’ll be OK with me?’
‘I’ve already told them, and they’re fine about it. There is one man I have to … I have to tell David that …’
‘Mandy, you do whatever you need to do. By the way, I’ll have to run Dad home after dinner. I just spoke to Jack, the young man from next door. He’s happy to sit with you while I’m out.’
‘Jackie, I’ll be fine here alone.’
‘I’d rather someone was here to look after you. He’s eighteen and he’s a very nice chap.’
‘Jackie, I’ll be fine.’
‘I just want you to be happy, Mandy.’
‘I am happy, with you and your dad.’
‘Jack will come over anyway, just in case there’s anything you want.’
‘I don’t need a teenage lad to look after me,’ Mandy said, giggling.
‘I just want to make sure that you have everything you need, Mandy. I mean, everything.’
