Henry watched her car disappear around a corner before he stretched, cracked his neck, and ran a tired hand across his face. He trudged back into the hospital and made his way to the elevators in the back. He rode up the fifth floor alone and in silence, with only his thoughts to keep him company.
The elevator doors slid open and he stepped out into a narrow hallway, counting the steps as he approached his office. A quick knock, and he opened the door.
Geraldine Ashfeld was sitting on the leather couch beside his desk, cradling their newly adopted son in her arms.
“You’re going to have to let him go at some point,” Henry chuckled when his wife looked up at him and smiled.
“Never,” Geraldine replied, adjusting the blanket the boy was wrapped in. “He’s precious.”
“Sure is,” Henry replied. “Have you decided on a name yet? They’re stalling the paperwork as a favor for me, but they can’t stall it forever.”
Geraldine nodded and bit her lower lip. “Kyle,” she said. “His name is Kyle.”
