  Her hair was in a short low cut, her clothes we tightly fitted and she looked like she had been hitting the gym since birth. Her tank top showed off her well defined slim waist and well defined muscles. Her husband resembled an Arnold Schwarzenegger look a like. Yeah, they looked as if they were over forty and lived in a fitness center from sun up to sun down.

  “What the… Frank, you’d better hightail your ass in here quick. I think this little girl done killed the good doctor,” she yelled as she walked over hovering over Vega’s body.

  “Stop gawking at him like that,” I grimaced noticing how she was staring down at his dick.

  “Oh you don’t tell me what to do missy. I should kick your high yellow ass right here and now. What did you do to him?” She accused pointing her bony finger at me.

  “Nothing! I didn’t do anything to him,” I breathed feeling a panic attack coming on.

  “Oh my God. I’m calling the police right now Marra,” her husband Frank gasped as he came in to view Vega on the floor with his cell phone to his ear.

  “No, see, you guys don’t understand. You see I did not do this.” I pointed down to Vega’s body.

  “I’m sure you didn’t. But we’ll let the authorities decided that shit.” Marra crossed her arms in front of her.

  Breathing hysterically, I darted for the front door. I knew it was a long shot but I had to take the risk. There was no way in hell I was going down for some shit I didn’t do. It would be different if this was one of the many murders that I had committed in the past but this wasn’t the case. Marra shot to the door blocking it with her body. She looked at me like she dared me to try and move her. I was a lot of things but I was no fool. I knew I couldn’t fight that big army looking bitch and win. There was no getting away from her that way.

  “Move!”

  “No,” Marra smirked twisting her head in my face.

  “Move now or you’re going to be next,” I snarled gritting my teeth.

  “Oh and then the little bitch wants to threaten me,” Marra barked jabbing me in the stomach with the force of ten thousand steel drywall studs. “Bitch you thought I didn’t know how to fight? You should’ve known better than that. Com’ on get up.”

  I crawled to the door clasping my stomach meeting only with her foot rather than the sweet release of freedom. “I said move bitch.”

  “What the fuck are you going to do if I don’t?”

  I dug into my jeans pulling out my .45. With every bit of strength I had in me, I rose to my feet pointing that motherfucka dead in her chin. She jumped back scared as shit. She was big and bad but not against a piece of steel like the one I was holding in my hand. She wasn’t ready for that fight though. Marra put her hands up by her face surrendering as she backed away from the door.

  I slowly pimped out the door keeping my eye on her before turning the gun to her husband, keeping him at bay as well. Once I was in the clear, I hauled ass to Cookie’s old car that I had taken and jetted out of there. I knew the police were going to be in hot pursuit of my ass within minutes. I would need to ditch the car but I had to get as far away as possible without bringing unnecessary attention to myself.

  Searching every nook and cranny of the area, I noticed that I had driven more than seven blocks away. That was a good enough distance to get out and truck it the rest of the way on foot. Any further and those motherfuckas would have caught my silly ass in no time. I pulled over in front of a small kids’ park turning the car off. My chest pumped hard as I took a deep breath looking around checking out the scene. The coast was clear.

  It was dark as fuck on the street, like they didn’t have enough money in this damn town to afford to put streetlights on every damn block or something. No one was outside and no kids played at the parked. For a weekend, it was odd as hell that there were no parties going on and no drunken public displays. It was dead in this lonely ass suburb. I didn’t understand why anybody would want to live out here. It wasn’t as live as the city. It was downright boring as shit. I grabbed my gun tucking it back into my jeans and opened the door.

  “Get the fuck on the ground!” Cops came from everywhere, anywhere and out of nowhere. “Don’t you fucking move girl or I’ll blow your fucking head off.”

  “What the fuck?” I shook my head raising my hands carefully to the sky trying to figure out where the fuck they all came from.

  They literally popped out of nowhere, jumping out of bushes and even had an eye in the sky with the fucking helicopter. I didn’t even hear that motherfucka flying around when I was driving. I didn’t even see anyone driving behind me as I weaved up and down bending neighborhood blocks to throw them off my direction. This was straight bullshit. And, as I followed their directions to put my hands on my head, drop to my knees, and press my stomach to the concrete, I knew this shit was over.

  “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an…” He kept yapping as he bent my arms behind me slapping the cuffs on me tight as fuck. I just tuned everyone and everything out around me. Fuck ‘em all. I ain’t got shit to say to their hillbilly asses except I wanna speak to my got-damn lawyer.

  Concurrently…

  Mika

  “I know you didn’t think I would let you go kiddo.” David licked the side of my face from my chin to my earlobe.

  I felt vomit reach the back of my throat. If it weren’t for the fear that this nigga shoot me before I thought of a way out of this shit, I might have blown chunks right there on his feet. Standing so close behind me, I could feel his junk pressed against my ass before he shoved me forward. He aimed his gun pointing towards the one floodlight shining on us shooting it out.

  “Damn, now that’s better. I like it better in the dark. Don’t you… Ladies?” He aimed the gun at Deidra’s head as she crept out of the bathroom. “You ain’t slick bitch.”

  My head was spinning. Where were the goons? Had he killed them by sneaking up on them after cutting out the lights? That had to be what happened. That was the only way he could have shot those big burly men and come out unscathed. I was hoping Ox wasn’t among those men. But my thoughts only shifted to the negative. David was crazy and was capable of just about anything especially when he was high off that shit. It was so dark. The only that gave us any light was the late moonlight creeping through the hall windows.

  “You stupid motherfucka. You think you gonna get away with this shit? Huh?” I snapped feeling enraged.

  “Shut up bitch before I snap your neck in half,” David roared. “I almost had both of y’all at the football field. Y’all were lucky as hell getting up out of there.”

  “Naw, you was lucky that sawed off didn’t bang your ass. Just shoot us right here motherfucka and get this shit over with you pussy ass bitch.” Deidra raised her gun up to his head.

  “Bitch, you put that gun down or the last thing you see before you die will be her blood being splatter on your face,” David threatened as he cocked his gun back.

  Secretly I beckoned for her to just shoot that son of a bitch right between the eyes. All I could do was pray that she didn’t miss. If I had a gun in my hand I would have been shot his ass a long time ago. If it weren’t for him catching me off guard in the bedroom, I would have. Nervousness sent a chill throughout my body like a lightning bolt.

  Deidra looked my way and as I turned to her our eyes met. The moonlight made here eyes sparkle and I knew exactly what was about to happen next. She stared at me as if to calm me like there was nothing to worry about and in that moment, I felt safe. Remembering her words ‘we take care of our own’ replayed in my head. I had no doubt in my mind that she had some kind of plan concocted in her head and we were going to get out of this unharmed leaving David dead as fuck. Deidra leisurely lowered the gun to the ground allowing it to hit the floor softly and as she came back up David shot her without reluctance.

  “No!” I bawled out in complete total horror. “Deidra, oh my gosh no.”

  “Bye bitch. Stupid ho trusted me for what?” David taunted as he walked towards me digging the barrel of the gun into my face. “I told your ass I wasn’t playin’. Didn’t I? With your dumbass. I called you dumb all those motherfucking years ‘cause you ain’t never gonna be more than what you is right now. Shit.”

  “Why? Why are you doing all of this, David?”

  “Why not bitch? You thought you was gonna take my son from me. You thought you was gonna live the high life with this ho ass nigga up in here. Naw, bitch we all about to die right here tonight. Together.” His breath smelled just like a month old dead body in a landfill.

  He was high as hell off that narcotic. He came up in here on some renegade shit because that drug had given him the much needed courage he needed in order to carry this shit out. I stood there with David’s body pressed against mine. My body convulsed damn near losing my mind as I glanced down at Deidra’s lifeless body wondering if she was still clinging to life or not. I couldn’t see where she was shot and hated that I felt so helpless that I couldn’t help her.

  “You’re mine. I fucking told you that shit from jump,” David hissed in my ear as he pulled the trigger.

  Boom, boom. Boom, boom. It was the sound of my heart sounding loud as fuck in my head. I heard nothing else past it. Then the loud sound calmed down and all I heard was the clicking of David’s gun in my ear. It clicked over and over again repeatedly. That son of a bitch was out of bullets. He tossed the gun to the side angrily then moved over slightly to reach down for Deidra’s gun.

  “Ahhhh,” I screeched unable to deal with this shit any longer, pushing him into the adjacent wall. “Don’t even think about it you pussy motherfucka. Com’ on.”

  “Oh bitch you wanna fight?” David hacked up something disgusting from the back of his throat spitting it on the floor. “This shit is pointless babe. You know you’re just gonna lose.”

  I rushed him throwing blow after blow of my fist to his face and stomach. Kneeing him in his dick and stomping on his feet, he bellowed his pain in my ear as he grabbed hold of my waist trying to stop my random torrent on his ass. I bit him and he would return the favor retaliating even harder and rougher than I had. The pain only channeled a new level of anger inside of me. I didn’t give a fuck what he did to me but I was determined to show him that I was no longer that scared, timid bitch he was used to.

  Scratching at his eyes and face, I kicked and punched until I got tired and when I was I kicked and punched some more. Nothing could stop me from wailing on his ass. The energy I that kept me going was fueled by years of pain and suffering I endured by his hand. It as fueled by the lost soul of my dead son. Even if I wanted to stop, I wouldn’t. Not too far from our brawl lied Deidra’s gun. It was no less than a few feet from my grasp. I had to get to it. I knew I could if I only reached out my hand for it. That was until his wide hands wrapped around my neck choking the shit out of me.

  With one hand he punched me in the mouth so hard my teeth damn near click and crunched together. His fist met with my eyes more times than I could count before he jabbed me in my torso left and right continually. The pain was immensely unbearable yet I pressed on, continuing to scratch and pull and tug and bite at his any part of him that was open. He beat me much like he did when we were together. I thought I would be used to the shit by now but I wasn’t. It was no more painful then than it was now. I kept the memory of my son in my head to keep me going. With the thought of him in my head, I couldn’t give up. I couldn’t quit.

  “Aye motherfucka.”

  My fist continued fighting but only with the breeze of the air. David was no longer attacking me. I sat up quickly regaining my composure to find David and Ox throwing blows on each other on the floor a few feet from me. They were arguing and punching, throwing each other from one wall and crashing into the other. Every time one of them knocked the other into the wall or dropped them to the floor with a punch there was a loud sound much like a sonic boom. I couldn’t catch my breath soon enough thanking God that Ox wasn’t dead and that he had come to my rescue.

  “Hit her again bitch,” Ox roared as he pummeled David’s face on the floor. “I dare you.”

  “Motherfucka that’s my bitch. Fuck you,” David clapped back knocking him in the head as he lifted himself up off the floor, charging at Ox before crunching his back hard against the wall.

  They fought destroying each other, tearing one another apart limb by limb. Seizing the opportunity, I crawled inconspicuously to the gun lying next to Deidra’s motionless frame. Snatching it in my hand, I affixed it in my shaky hand before gazing up at the two men. Watching them was like seeing one big black cloud rumble in the hallway. My eyes couldn’t get around them enough to focus in on not shooting the wrong person.

  Their bodies were moving so fast and all I had was the fading moonlight to guide me and be my light. Ox always told me to shoot only when I trusted my heart to do so. But my heart and my eyes were too different things. I didn’t want to accidentally kill the one person I had left in my life. I needed him. No I didn’t want him, I needed him. He had quickly become my everything. If I didn’t have him, I truly unequivocally had nothing. One wrong mistake would devastate me for the rest of my life. The gun was aimed but I wasn’t ready to shoot it. I wasn’t confident enough that I had my mark. I wasn’t sure. I wasn’t…

  And, then the gun went off. The shit was so loud that it felt like it nearly ruptured my eardrums. Both men ceased their rough wrestling and dropped to the floor almost instantly. One single shot, that was all that rang out from the smoking gun in my hands. My hand was still trembling as hunted for movement on the floor. I couldn’t make out whom I had hit. I knew I had hit someone but whom? My heart raced hoping Ox would get up and praise me for a job well done on my marksmanship. But there was no mobility, at least none that I could see.

  “Baby?” With my finger still lodged on the trigger, I began crawling towards the two of them.

  I was halted by a show of activity occurring, as I got closer. One of the men began moving around before standing, seemingly facing my way. He appeared to be walking progressively toward me. I backed up gradually unable to make out who it was that was coming at me. My eyes squinted struggling to get a clear visual of the man before me.

  “Ox? Ox baby if it’s you say something. Say something to me baby.” Fear trembled in the whisper of my voice, not because of the figure coming for me but for maybe shooting the wrong person. “Ox?”

  The man’s hand met with the little bit of light there was before the rest of the arm did. He was holding out his hand for me to hand him over the gun or help me up from the floor, one of the two. But I still couldn’t see his face. He refused to speak and yet he motioned toward me like a half dead zombie. Tears filled my eyes, pouring down the old paths of former tears on my cheeks. He remained quiet yet became closer and closer with every passing second. I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and prepared to hand over the gun praying like hell that it was Ox and not David. And then there it was again. That funky old foul sock stench filled my nose.

  “Go to hell you bitch you.” I turned the gun and squeezed the trigger not once, not twice, but thrice.

  That motherfucka fell to the floor harder than a boulder. I was confident I had the right man this time. Crawling over to stare into his face, I caught wind of the bullet hole lodged in between that bastard’s eyes. Yeah I got his ass. I got his ass good. Not only was it a good shot but also it was over. The nightmare that I had been living for so many years was finally all over. Celebrating my success, I gazed down at David’s eyes staring back at me as if he knew he deserved everything that he got.

  “This one’s for you baby,” I chanted as I stood up over my kill.

  “Mika,” Ox called out from down the hall.

  “Ox, baby. I’m here.” I ran to his side grateful that he was not dead from my mishap of shooting him earlier. “I’m so sorry baby. I didn’t mean to shoot you. I was trying to shoot him.”

sp; “Fuck that shit,” Ox assessed the damage to his arm. “It’s just a flesh wound.”

  It wasn’t just a flesh wound but I guess he had a high threshold for pain. “Baby, I think we should go to the doctor.”

  “Yeah, we are as soon as I snatch Deidra up and take her to the emergency room first,” he replied making his way over to his sister.

  He hobbled over to her scooping her up still lying stiff on the floor, forgetting to even check her pulse. Judging by the pool of blood on the floor where she once lied, I could tell she lost a ton of blood. I wouldn’t be surprised if she wasn’t already gone. But I couldn’t tell Ox that. He was about to go through the very same thing that I was about to go through, burying a sister. We sprinted down the hall and out the door as Ox pressed his cell to his ear to call some more of his goons to come to the house and clean up the mess. We had left behind.

  “You think she’ll be okay baby?” I asked meekly wondering if he might have been in denial about the state of her condition.

  “Aye, Mika… I love you baby,” Ox pressed his foot so hard on the gas I thought we would crash into a pole or building before we even made it to the hospital.

  “I love you too babe.”

  For the remainder of the drive, I remained quiet. I knew the amount of pain he was feeling for losing a loved one. Figuring Ox might have been in denial, I decided not to say much else to him until he was able to process the truth on his own. Deidra was all the family that he had in this world until me. Now it was up to me to be his rock, backbone, and everything. I had no problem doing any of that for him. He was truly the man I was destined to be with. Ox was my one true love, my soul mate, my king and I was ready to be his ride or die chick by any means necessary. There was nothing or no one that would keep us from being together forever.
