“Did you have to kill him?” she snapped, showing real anger in her voice. “That was just murder…”
The tall man bubbled with vehemence. “Speak to me of murder?” His growl was like that of a wounded bear, but if one listened long enough, one could tell it masked laughter. “Speak to me not of murder, elderly woman, for I created murder.” He then looked up to the clear sky of the late afternoon and to the leeches writhing on the walls. “Speak unto the Lord of Heaven a name forbidden, all of you. Tell the God of all gods the name of me, his bastard grandson, who wants to come home!”
“Nosmada,” Zillian pleaded. “Just stop…”
Unabated, the big man shouted out to the leeches, “Venerate the name accursed of all the earth and stars forevermore!”
From the maws of the undead hissed a single word that couldn’t be misunderstood:
“Cain!”

Steven L. Shrewsbury, from Central Illinois, enjoys football, books about history, guns, politics, mystery shows and good fiction. 365 of his short stories have been published in print or digital media. His novels STRONGER THAN DEATH, HAWG, TORMENTOR, and GODFORSAKEN run from horror to historical fantasy. His collaboration with Nate Southard BAD MAGICK was his first hardback release from Bloodletting Press.
