The Quiet Professor

Page 18

by Betty Neels

He gathered her close and kissed her. For a professor of pathology, thought Megan dreamily, he kissed very nicely. When she had her breath again she said, ‘I should like to know—’

‘Yes, yes, my darling, I’m sure you would, but first, will you marry me?’

‘Yes, oh, yes, Jake, but I should like to know—’

‘Don’t waste time asking silly questions, my love.’ So she didn’t, but presently she pulled a little away from him.

‘I’ve missed my train,’ she told him.

‘You’re staying here tonight. My mother and father are back from New Zealand and waiting here to meet you.’ He kissed the tip of her nose. ‘How delightfully pretty you are. We’ll go and meet them. I phoned your mother this afternoon.’

‘Do you mean to say you told Mother that I wasn’t coming home tomorrow? How did you know that? Supposing I had refused to come with you this afternoon? What would you have done?’

The professor thought for a moment. ‘Followed you to the station and abducted you.’

  Her eyes shone. ‘Really?’

‘Really. You see, my dearest girl, I love you.’

‘Oh, Jake, I want to stay with you forever.’ She looked up at him with such a loving face that he bent to kiss it just once more.

‘I shall take care that you do,’ he told her, ‘and now let us go home.’
