Path of the Heretic (The Beholder Book 2)

Neither Jason nor Emily nor anyone in their small group had much to pack before leaving the City of Tranquility. They put Alice’s rabbit, named Pepper, into a box that the girl insisted she carry on her own. After all of the Londoners were gone, the city looked empty. They walked out of the building in silence, and met Dave waiting for them beside the platforms.
“I’d love to see you off and say goodbye to little Alice and her new friend,” he said with a smile.
Dave’s words made Alice beam.
“How’s your hand?” he asked Matt.
“It hurts,” he raised his hand cast in plaster, “but I hope it’ll get better, thanks.”
In the past two weeks Tyler’s Energy clinging to Matt’s flesh prevented it from healing, and Jason insisted no one should try and help it heal.
The platform glided peacefully upwards, and Jason had one last chance to take a look at the beautiful corridors with doors that had mysteries behind. Even though Dave thought they’d visit the underground from time to time, Jason hoped to delay it for as long as possible.
The platform reached the surface and they found themselves in the crowd of people who ignored them again as they appeared from underground.
Dave hailed two cabs and told everyone goodbye. Jason and Emily were the last ones about to get into the cab.
“Emily, I know there’s one place that you would like to visit.” He pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket and offered it to her. “This is where your parents and grandfather are buried. I’ve never mentioned it to you since you … didn’t like us.”
Emily’s eyes wide and teary, she clutched the piece of paper. “Thank you, Dave.” She hugged him and Dave patted her lightly on the back.
“See you.” Jason and Dave shook hands, then Jason took his seat.
Dave waved at them as they told the cab driver to head for Heathrow Airport.
Through the windows Jason could see that the city life had returned to its usual frantic pace. The passers-by had no idea that only a week before they’d been underground, being witnesses to the fight of Light and Dark forces. The Sight was a miracle, and Jason was finally in harmony with it, thanks to Emily whose hand he held in his own.
For a second, Jason wondered what Pariah was going to do next. There was no way to tell. All Jason knew was that some day they were going to meet again, and it would be their final time.
Thanks for reading Path of the Heretic! If you enjoyed this book, I will appreciate it if you leave a review and tell your friends about it. Without a big publisher to promote me, I heavily depend on word of mouth.
