Ancients, the: Original settlers of Nuttinnew who left their history in a chest hidden in Center House.
Bourg [Borg]: Tyter’s guardian and the wellkeeper of the west
Brindle: Young female easterner with a speech impediment who becomes a wellwalker.
Caretender: One who cares for the ill and injured in Nuttinnew.
CB aka Caretender Bocononobono: a western caretender.
Center House: The large house situated in the center of Nuttinnew and just north of the well.
Chest of the Ancients: A chest hidden in Center House containing parchment scrolls written in a forgotten language which Wudrick is slowly learning to decipher.
COE acronym for Center Of Everything: The generally aloof, Supreme mythical or real entity by which everything exists.
Dampy: One of the rebel leaders, short of height, long of rod.
Easterners: All Nuttinnewians who live east of the well.
Fate: The Supreme mythical or real entity thought to be so highly involved in human affairs humans that nothing occurs, neither good nor bad, which is not by Fate.
Fleetra [Flee-tra]: Seamstress to Pentalope and Mardrith’s cousin (oddling).
Gatekeeper: A frozen ice-being which attends to The Key which parts the worlds of Upperearth and Underearth, protecting each from the other.
Great Veget Field: The large veget field just north of Center House which provides the bulk of veget for Nuttinnew.
Growing Rock: A large boulder protruding out of the ground at the easternmost edge of Nuttinnew which legend says started out as small as a pebble and grows little by little, moment by moment.
Hooded One, The: A mysterious being with an gravelly voice, whose face remain always hidden by a hood.
Joudlier [Jude-lee-air]: A rebel leader with more brawn than brains but still has the undying respect of the rank and file rebels.
Key, the: One of many guardian objects which separate Upperearth from Lowerearth.
Keyshi [Key-shee]: A sentient summer breeze which wonders into Nuttinnew and reluctantly becomes involved in its affairs.
Kudjer Aaches [Kood-jer Akes]: An Ambassador, husband of Penca.
Loden Sknett [Loh-den Skin-et]: Wellkeeper of the east and rebel leader.
Maadle [May-del]: Tyter’s mother who dies after giving him birth.
Mantle of Many Pieces: A full-lengthed cape of veget cloth upon which Pentalope had Fleetra sew many of the unusual pieces which had fallen from the sky.
Mardrith [Mard-rith]: Fleetra’s cousin (oddling).
Nocomback [No-come-back]: The wastelands which lie beyond the rolling, white hills surrounding Nuttinnew.
Nuttinnew [Nut-tin-new]: A small town so isolated from the rest of the world, its inhabitants have never even considered if anyone else exists beyond the surrounding rolling, white sandy hills.
Oddlings: A name first introduced by Penca Aaches, making fun of the strangely intimate relationship thought to exist between Fleetra and her cousin, Mardrith.
Penca Aaches [Pen-ka Akes]: An ambassador, wife of Kudjer.
Pentalope Pulpitt [Pent-a-lope Pull-pit]: Honorary Mayor of Nuttinnew who gets caught up in her own self-aggrandizement in her attempt to rule over all Nuttinnew.
Piece: (1) One of the strange objects which fell out of the sky. (2) The unusual object Tyter retrieves from the well.
Piecechip: A chip from the piece Tyter retrieved from the well.
Piecekeepers: A elite group created by Pentalope to enforce her will over the westerners.
Rebels: Those Easterners who followed their wellkeeper’s proclamations for change in Nuttinnew.
Reed: A measurement = approx. one yard (usa).
Rod: A measurement = approx. one foot (usa).
Seed: A measurement = approx. one inch (usa).
Sledge aka Old Sledge: An older, but tough and wiry, rebel leader.
Sollie Forbal [Sah-lee For-ball], aka The widow Forbal: Wudrick Pulpitt’s paramour.
Talon [Ta-lawn]: Tyter’s father who mysteriously leaves Nuttinnew shortly after his birth.
Tonc [Tawngk] or Old Tonc: Acronym for Traumatizer Of Northern Cities: An old northern breeze to which Keyshi makes a life altering promise.
Tyter [Tie-ter]: The young wellwalker who is lowered into the belly of the well twice a day to measure the water level by counting stone layers.
Underearth: (1) To humans, it refers to anywhere underground. (2) To non-human entities it is all that is kept guarded from Upperearth by the power of The Keys and their attendants, the Gatekeepers.
Underearthling: A human term referring to any real or imagined savage creature believed to live in Underearth.
veget [veh-jet]: The singular crop grown in Nuttinnew from which all food, clothing and implements are made.
Veget [Veh-jet]: A vague Supreme real or imagined entity, which usually gets the credit if Fate allows something good to come into a person’s life.
Well ( The): It stands in the middle of the town, dividing it east and west, and is Nuttinnew’s only water source through the dry season.
Wellkeeper: The Western wellkeeper is Borg. The Eastern wellkeeper is Loden. It is their responsibility to distribute the well water to the people on their respective sides of the well and to insure that the water level is check twice daily by lowering the wellwalker, Tyter, into it.
Westerners: All Nuttinnwians who live west of the well.
Wuderbutz [Woo-der-buts]: What Pentalope calls her husband, Wudrick, just to embarrass him in front of others.
Wudrick Pulpitt [Wood-rick] Pentalope’s publically bumbling husband, who privately reigns as
Nuttinnew’s one and only true scientist.
