Nestled among the sandy rolling hills in a far away land, lies the little town of Nuttinnew where nothing ever changes. Then one day strange "pieces" (called such for they were thought to be pieces of the heavens) fell from the sky. At first merely a curiosity, these objects were quickly gathered up and soon became an enchantment to the town folks who began to desire them above even the necessities of life. Unbeknownst to all be the young wellwalker, a similar looking object had been recovered from the depths of the well. Could it be the key to underearth? A simmering contention between the self-aggrandizing mayor, Pentalope Pulpit, and the covertly rebellious Wellkeeper of the East, Loden, leads to an accusation of treason and bursts into an open rebellion, pitting the people residing east of the town's well, against those living to the west. At the same time the pieces were falling from the sky, the young wellwalker, Tyter, who descended into the well everyday to check the water level, discovers a magical object deep in the well, which first saves his life, then makes him deathly ill. Later he discovers this object is very similar to those which had fallen from the sky. A young female, Brindle, thought to be retarded due to a speech impediment, is chosen to take Tyter's place in the well. As the strife between east and west grows, Brindle is assisted in the well by Keyshi, a mischievous, sentient, summer breeze. Together they team up to save Tyler's life by confronting a gatekeeper of Under earth. But the culminating clash between the forces leave the town, already divided in loyalties, physically torn apart, as a Great Gorge rips through the center of town leaving the well standing stately at its center, yet inaccessible for water to be drawn. With the coming of the pieces, passions are inflamed and the lust for power, at whatever the cost, rages in the hearts of the contenders, each of whom would rule Nuttiness in their own very different fashion. The Rending is Book One of Pieces, a three volume fantasy fiction novel for adults of all ages. It is a non-stop action adventure, driven by an assortment of lively spirited characters, from the gentle, guardian giant to the merciless mayor. All of whom the reader gets to know intimately. It is not a book easily summed up with words, for it is rich with plot and characters who must be experienced and enjoyed.
