House Of Vampires 3 (The Lorena Quinn Trilogy)

  “Why?”

He gave me a look. “Because, I love you.”

I knew he meant it but I shook my head anyway. In that moment, I knew that I loved him too. Call me whatever you want for being in love with two guys at once, call me fickle, call me names, tell me that I'm an idiot or frivolous or whatever, but I couldn't not love them both. “Zane, I-”

He held up one hand. “Do not say what you are going to. I would not have the strength to deny you if you did. Let me do this for you.”

  “Stop.”

We both jerked as a rich voice rumbled through the room. At first, wildly maybe, I thought that it was Wei, but I turned and saw Vlad Tepes, father of all vampires, standing at the edge of the bed.

“Get out of here,” Zane snapped. I was surprised to hear someone take that tone with Vlad. I fully expected the master vampire to get angry, but instead he smiled. He looked almost proud.

“You are not the only one who needs to make amends, my son.” Vlad glanced at me with dark eyes, and then bowed. “I am an imperfect man, Lorena Quinn, and I let my desires outdo me.”

I didn't know what to say to that. It was an apology, sure, but I wasn't really ready to forgive him. “What are you doing here?”

Vlad picked up another IV, and stuck it in his arm. “I will not lose two sons today.”

I was about to say something, I don't know what, but I felt like arguing with him. I didn't want Vlad's blood in Wei's veins. But the moment the blood went from tube to flesh Wei's whole body jerked and suddenly I didn't care if a load of serial killers were hooked up to Wei, so long as he lived.

I rushed to Wei's side and took his hand in mine. His fingers weren't as gnarled as they had been. They were still cool beneath my touch, but fleshy. His eyes went from hazy to clear, his lips softened.

  “Lorena?”

It was the first word out of his mouth, and I shivered to hear it.

  “I'm here.”

He didn't breathe out a sigh of relief, vampires don't need to breathe, but he seemed to sag against the metal just the same. “I knew you'd come for me.”

“Because I love you?” I asked.

His not quite healed lips curled into a smile. “No, because you are stubborn.”

I laughed, and I kissed him, and then I laughed again. Everything was going to be just fine.

  THE FINAL

  CHAPTER

It took my five years to learn to create my pocket dimension, and it was worth every moment.

Things moved fast and then slow when we finally left the temple behind us. My father officially moved into his mother's house, and I moved out of it, back into the mansion. Marquessa Green, executor of the estate released the funds back to me, and I gave them to my dad. He used them to go to school, and eventually he became a math teacher. It suits him, and he is finally happy with himself, and come to terms with his mother's life and death.

Jenny and Reikah got married. They day they made it legal the pair of them were at the courthouse. I held Jenny's hand as she signed the papers. Reikah wore the prettiest sari that I have ever seen, and Jenny put a golden ring on her finger with a single stone in it. It was a beautiful day.

Alan and Dmitri didn't get married. They traveled the world together with Peter to look after them. I have received letters and gifts from Russia, Wales, France, and Germany. Someone introduced Dmitri to the iPhone and now I get at least once picture of them a day...or rather...night. They are the cutest couple and their love is pathetically cute.

Genevieve left Vlad. I'm not entirely sure what did it, but she left him. I was surprised that Yasmina went with her. I wish I had gotten a chance to understand them a little better, but I am happy for them both. I think Genevieve has a boyfriend, but she's being very tight lipped about it. Yasmina works at a bar in Richmond.

Vlad and his remaining wife and daughters, who seem happy enough together, went back to Vlad's castle. I think they brood there. I still haven't forgiven him for locking me up and trying to force the prophecy.

My pocket dimension is perfect, at least as far as I am concerned.

It's a main street in the middle of a small town with seven buildings. One shop is a book store, one a coffee shop, one a comic and gaming store, a pizza parlor, one is an apartment with four bedrooms, one is a witch’s supply shop, I work there, and one is a carpenter’s workshop. Guess who works there?

The pocket dimension is filled with the ghosts of people who have nowhere to go and don't want to move on. They know my name, I know them, and we live together in a town I feel like I've always belonged in. I've named the pseudo-town Paradise, because that's what it is for me.

The scent of herbs and crystals fills my nose as I lock up my shop. Business today was good. Ghosts from all over the world come to visit me. Sometimes they bring herbs, tokens, or trinkets from wherever they come from and trade them for something else. I've learned that ghosts like to have things as much as they did while they were alive.

A dark hand slides over my cheek and I turn to accept the kiss that I know is coming. Zane smells like wine and pizza sauce and his lips are gentle. There is a child sitting on his hip. The child looks like us. My hazel eyes stare at me out of a round, softly brown face. His lips are already smirking as he reaches out for me.

“Mommy!” he cries happily. I take him in my arms and give him a hug. “Hello, Michael,” I say kissing his forehead. “What did you do today?”

I am regaled with a babbling story about the pizza place and the ducks who came to visit. There very well may have been ducks. My son has the same way with animals that my half-sister had.

Zane's arm wraps around my back and we both listen to Michael talk as we walk next door to the carpenter’s shop.

Wei works without a shirt on and when I approach his dark eyes sparkle with amusement. There is a little girl, a year older than the boy, sitting on a table, her legs swing as she sips from a coffee cup.

“She's too young for coffee,” I chide lightly. She's too young for a lot of things. I haven't told her about the prophecy yet. I think telling a four-year-old that she's going to bring magic back into the world is a lot to set on her shoulders.

Wei shrugs his shoulders. He's never been able to deny Fai anything. It's both annoying and sweet. “She likes it.”

I roll my eyes, and he comes over to kiss me too. He smells like wood and warmth. I like it.

I won’t say that being in love with two men is easy. It's not. There is a lot of balance and energy, but at the end of the day, when I curl up in their arms, I know that it's worth it.

“Hi, Mommy,” Fai says hopping off the bench. She does not come running to me, or reach out the way Michael does. Fai has always been more independent. Her dark hair, so like Wei's, sweeps nearly the length of her back as she looks up at me with her dark eyes.

“I made you something,” she tells me.

“Oh?” I say, pleasure already curling my lips. “What is it?”

She reaches beneath the table that she sat on, and pulls out what looks to be an egg, though it's large enough to be an ostrich’s . I blink and take it. It's heavy, and carved of a wood so dark it's almost black. The surface shines with light, but not a light that exists in the shop. A moment later I realize the light is coming from inside the egg.

“It's beautiful,” I say. “How did you do that?”

She gives me a look. “I made it.” She says it like it explains absolutely everything. “It'll bring magic to the world.”

Wei, Zane, and I all go very, very still.

“What?” I say after a moment of tense silence.

Fai gives me a smile. “It's what dragons do, Mommy.”
