“I did.”
“I knew it.”
It must hurt that the woman Corie viewed as a second mother tried to kill her. But she didn’t seem hurt. She seemed satisfied.
Then her hand moved weakly in his. “Pain.”
He realized she was asking for pain medicine and guided her hand to the pump that dispensed it. “Go back to sleep. It’s really over.”
“Evan couldn’t kill me after all.” Her mouth twisted and her voice was a hoarse whisper. “I’m—not his type.”
“You’re mine.”
Corie looked at him and her face relaxed. Or maybe it was the painkillers.
Although she looked right into his eyes when she asked, “Stay?”
“Forever.”
She put her hand back in his. The blue eyes fluttered closed and then open again briefly. “Jack?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Thank you.” Then the medicine took her away again into its narcotic embrace.
Jack leaned down and kissed her forehead. He pulled the covers up over her thin shoulders and settled in to wait, for as long as it took.
