Murder at Camp (Pineville Gazette Mystery Book 5)

Betty watched Mary pull the back doors to the milk open and peek inside. “What is it?” she asked and dared to take a look. “Oh...my...” she gasped.
Mary nodded. “Gold.”
Resting in the back of the truck were bags and bags full of gold—gold dug up from the earth; gold that was untouched by man; natural gold worth millions.
“I guess...we should try and find Mr. Hayes,” Betty whispered. “I sure hope he’s okay.”
Mary handed Betty the key to her car. “You find the sheriff and start looking for Mr. Hayes. I need to go hide this gold.”
Betty stared at Mary, smiled, and then hurried away. Mary quickly closed the back doors to the milk truck, drove the truck out to Farmer Griffin’s farm, hid all the gold in a field that had grown over, and raced back to town and began helping a search party look for poor Mr. Hayes. Mr. Hayes was found before night arrived, tied up in his own basement. Mary, relieved that her old milkman was unharmed, drove back to the paper, went to her office, and plopped down behind her desk.
“Betty,” she said in a happy but tired voice, “I can’t wait to find out what our next adventure is going to be. But in the meantime,”—Mary tossed her eyes east and walked them all the way to Farmer Griffin’s farm— “all’s well that ends well...for the good guys, at least.”
“All’s well that ends well,” Betty agreed. “Pie?” she asked.
“Sure.” Mary smiled, forced her legs to work, and limped down to the diner with Betty, under a blanket of beautiful stars.
Far away, sitting on another blanket under the same stars, unaware of the events that had taken place in town, Andy leaned forward and kissed Stephanie and asked her to marry him. Stephanie said yes, realizing that for the first time in her life—through all the ugliness and pain—she had found true love.
