She was so immersed in her miserable thoughts that she didn’t notice Abel’s approach until he opened the door. His backpack was slung over one shoulder.
Their eyes met. Everything she felt was mirrored in his expression—remorse, anger, fear, sadness.
“Make room back there,” Scott said.
Levi moved over, shoving his bags into the cargo space so Abel could get in.
Bekah threw a nervous glance at Abel. “Last chance, Rylie.”
“Let’s go,” she said. “Now.”
Seth started the engine again. The sound must have carried up the hill, because Gwyn and Seth stopped by the door into the ranch. A voice echoed over the air just before Abel slammed the door.
“Rylie?” Her aunt was calling to her.
Rylie’s heart shattered as the van pulled away, and she couldn’t hold it back anymore. A sob ripped out of her. It hurt to cry, like getting stabbed in the chest. She couldn’t stop once it started.
“It’s okay,” Bekah said.
She shook her head and wiped her cheek with her hand, but there was no holding back the flood.
No. It wasn’t okay. It wasn’t okay at all.
The van rounded a corner, and the ranch—with Seth, Gwyn, and everything good about Rylie’s life—disappeared with it.
