After they had each taken a hearty sip of the complex wine, he pulled down the sheet and crawled in next to her. He regarded her seriously, wondering if he could ever get enough of her glorious body, and knew that he could not. Rather, he knew that he would spend the rest of his life loving this spectacularly beautiful woman. He surveyed her, reveling in her erotic beauty. Her cloud of fiery sun-kissed air hung in a tangle of enticing curls around her shoulders. Her cheeks were flushed a tantalizing rosy hue, as was her chest. Her full lips were red and swollen from his lusty kisses. His cock throbbed, knowing that if he pulled down the sheet and exposed her pussy lips, they would be as swollen and red as her pouty mouth. He resisted the impulse, knowing that he needed to talk to her.
Settling in beside her, Jorden took her glass from her and set it beside his on the bedside stand. “McKenna, we need to talk.”
She gave a surprised start and a slight frown tugged at her brow. “Why, Jorden, is something wrong? Is Chloe okay?”
Jorden gave a grateful sigh at her ever-ready concern for his daughter and pinched her cheek. “No, honey, thanks to you, Chloe is safe and has a decent chance of coming out this horrific experience stronger and more ready to face her life than she ever has.”
He hugged her close to him. “No, McKenna, this is about us. I owe you an apology.”
McKenna frowned and put up her hands to stop him. “No, Jorden, you don’t. You were upset and…understandably so. I made mistakes…bad ones. And a lot of people were hurt in the process.”
Jorden was fierce. “Stop, Mac, and hear me out. Yes, you made a big mistake and you paid for it dearly. But you came out of that experience stronger and more compassionate.” His lips twisted and he blew out a disgusted sigh. “Unlike me, who came out of the crap in my life more self-righteous and arrogant than I was before. Which according to several people, including you and my grandfather, was going some.”
He pressed his finger against her lips to stop her protest. “No, sweetheart, let me finish. It was a travesty that I equated your behavior with the man who wronged you with Francine’s psychotic behavior. Your actions couldn’t have been more different. Like me, you were the one who was wronged. But unlike me, you took responsibility for your actions and became a better person, more able to love and be loved. I did not. Rather, I allowed Francine’s sick antics to poison me, make me even more supercilious and less loving. For that, Mac, I am deeply sorry.”
Tipping up her chin he gazed into her eyes. “I love you, McKenna, and you love me.” When she tried to pull away, a teasing smile lighting her eyes, Jorden captured her in his arms. Rubbing his beard shadow against her neck, reveling in the mark it left on her tender skin, he said with a chuckle, “Sorry McKenna. You keep forgetting who is in charge here. I admit that I was—make that am—an arrogant asshole. That’s a given. But, what’s also a given is that you’re my woman and I’m your man. And, darling, we’re going to spend a lifetime together making up for the past and creating a future worthy of us both.”
He gazed into her eyes and swiped at the tear on her cheek. “Do you agree, McKenna?”
At her watery nod, he laughed. “That reminds me. I brought you a present.” He reached by the side of the bed and hauled up the toy box. At her surprised start followed by a knowing blush, he corrected himself with a grin. “Actually, honey, I brought you a lot of presents.” He added with a sly grin, “Sure hope you like to be surprised, baby, because you have no idea what this randy, arrogant man has in store for you.”
Rather than looking concerned or embarrassed as he’d expected, McKenna tossed him a saucy smile. “I need to confess, big guy. I peeked in that box the last time I was at your house. I have to say there are some scary things in that box. And some intriguing ones.” She tossed her head and said sweetly, “Just so you know, I’ve already decided which outrageous things I’m going to use on you.”
Jorden roared, then swiping at the moisture on his cheeks, he drawled, “Oh, baby, all I can say is, have at it!”

Not only his parents’ murder, but his hideous marriage to a vile woman. Into his life comes Mac. And what a woman she is. Glorious in every way. But like Jorden, tortured by her past. I was fascinated by this family drama. The challenging daughters, the ex-wife, the “other” woman, the righteous man, all familiar to many of us.
