April's Fool
Page 8
Before April could reply, he moved forward and covered her mouth with his. His kiss was deep, almost brutal, as he pressed her against the wall. She felt her body lifted as he jammed his legs between hers. His fingers dug into the flesh of her thighs as he forced her legs around his hips.
April's fingers twisted in his hair as his mouth continued the assault on hers. Her senses soared, her body heated, her mind spun in circles. She gasped when he rammed his penis inside her. Her body thudded against the wall as he slid deep inside.
He tore his mouth from hers. She tried to look into his eyes but the dark intensity was too much for her to bear. She squeezed her eyes closed.
"You like my cock inside you,” he said. “In fact, all you've ever wanted was for me to fuck you."
When April didn't reply, he shook her.
"Answer me!"
"Yes,” she whispered.
"Enjoy it while you can, bitch,” he said as his hips ground against her.
April struggled to keep pace with him but David wouldn't wait. He pounded into her again and again until he finally exploded.
Supreme disappointment seeped through her as his body wracked with spasms. He struggled to regain his breath as he slowly peeled her legs from his waist and let her feet fall to the floor.
He quickly stepped back, tucked his penis into his pants and zipped the fly. He reached into his back pocket and pressed an envelope into her hand. “Thought I'd save you the trouble of seeing a doctor,” he said. “Take two now with some Gravol...” His voice trailed off. “Hell, you know how it works, don't you? I don't need to tell you."
April peered down at the envelope in her hand, her mind muddled in confusion. David reached for the door and opened it. “Oh, and by the way..."
She looked at him, her mind still reeling.
"...now we're done."
He was gone, the door closed firmly behind him, before April finally found her voice. “I don't understand."
She walked to the sofa and sat down. She turned the envelope in her hand before she finally tore it open. Inside were four pills. She pulled a slip of paper out and gazed down at the typed script. Instructions for taking Orval.
April's heart stopped for a moment. She struggled to breathe. David had just handed her the morning after pill!
Chapter 10
"Okay,” Tilly said impatiently. “Stop crying. I don't think I can take any more."
"I can't help it,” April said as she dabbed her eyes and looked at the envelope on the coffee table. “I wish I'd taken the time to listen to you when you called earlier."
"I'd have warned you that Jeff misheard our conversation but it wouldn't have made much difference.” Tilly said. “I certainly never thought David was capable of this,” she said as she pointed at the envelope.
"I can't believe he wants me to take them."
Tilly sighed. “I know this is hard but you already knew what you wanted a couple days ago. Has that changed after what happened tonight?"
April reached for another tissue and gazed at Tilly through teary eyes. “Have I changed my mind about having the child if I'm pregnant?"
Her friend nodded.
"Of course not,” April replied. “If I'm pregnant, I'll have this child whether David wants it or not."
"Fine.” Tilly rose and reached for the envelope.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm doing what you should have done the second that asshole gave these to you.” Tilly walked to the bathroom and emptied the contents of the envelope into the toilet. April heard the toilet flush before her friend came back into the living room. She crumpled the empty envelope and tossed it on the coffee table. “There, problem solved."
"I wish it were that simple,” April said sadly. “I've always wanted children and I admit my biological clock has been ticking loudly lately, but I'm not so sure I can raise a child on my own. Especially when David is so near."
Tilly waved her hand in dismissal. “Screw David,” she said. “At least you found out what kind of guy he is before you fell head over heels in love with him."
April dabbed her eyes as fresh tears began to form.
Tilly gazed at her in amazement. “Are you fucking kidding?” When April didn't reply, she went on. “Come on, you've only been with him for a week. You hardly know the guy. You can't be in love already."
April sighed heavily. “But,” she said softly, “I'm afraid I am. I can't help it. I felt a connection with him from the first night."
Tilly shook her head. “You've confused good sex with love."
"No,” April said firmly. “It wasn't just sex. It was a lot more. At least it was for me."
Tilly checked her watch and rose from her chair. “It's late and I have to work tomorrow. I need to go home."
"I'm sorry to have kept you so long,” April said as she rose from the sofa and followed her friend to the door.
Tilly embraced April and kissed her cheek. “Look,” she said. “I won't pretend to understand how you feel about him. But I do know after what he pulled on you tonight, you have every right to be angry. If you are pregnant, I wouldn't let him get away scot-free."
"I wouldn't feel right forcing this on David."
Tilly chuckled. “If he didn't want children, he should have thought of that before he screwed you. He probably figured tossing those pills at you absolved him of any responsibility.” Tilly smiled as she pulled the door open. “Think about it."
April stared at the closed door for a time before she returned to the sofa. She reached for the crumpled envelope as Tilly's words vibrated through her mind. It would be several days before April knew for sure if she was pregnant. But David clearly didn't want to take that chance. He'd been thinking ahead.
April was about to reach for another tissue when anger suddenly replaced the sense of loss she'd been suffering all evening.
David wasn't willing to take on the responsibility of a child but that didn't mean she couldn't.
She rose from the sofa and paced the living room. It was very presumptuous of him to think she'd simply take those pills without considering what she might want. He might have decided long ago that he didn't want children but that didn't mean she couldn't.
April pitched the envelope across the room and ran to door. Who the hell did he think he was anyway? If he thought he could use her and cast aside like an unwanted toy, he had another think coming!

David tossed the blankets aside in frustration and rolled onto his side. He'd been trying to will himself to sleep for the past two hours.
But sleep wouldn't come. His mind wouldn't allow it. His thoughts continued to be trained on April. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw her brilliant smile, her deep blue eyes and her incredible body.
She'd been so soft, so warm and giving. How could he have misjudged her so damn badly? How could he have been such a fool ... again!
Memories of the day he'd learned of Serena's betrayal came flooding back to him. He tried to push them aside. But as he continued to toss and turn in bed, the memories wouldn't fade. In fact, they seemed to become more vivid.
He'd finally given up trying to sleep and was about to get out of bed when he heard a loud crashing sound. He turned on the bedside lamp to find shattered glass scattered all over the bedroom floor. A small rock perched haphazardly on the foot of his bed.
"You fucking bastard!"
He'd heard the voice coming from a distance and knew it was April. He stepped carefully around the shards of glass and peered out his bedroom window. She stood on his lawn, gazing up at him.
"What the hell are you doing?” he howled.
David ducked away from the window as another rock flew by him. All right, stupid question. The woman was definitely pissed at him.
"Tuck your balls into your pants and come down here to talk to me or I'll break more windows!"
David brushed the curtain aside and looked down at her. “You're deranged!” he yelled. “Go home or I'll call
the cops!"
April laughed heartily. “Go right ahead,” she said. “By the time they get here, I'll have broken every window in your house."
David was sorely tempted to do just that.
"And,” she added, “when the cops arrive, I'll tell them how you got me pregnant and wouldn't take responsibility for your own child!"
David frowned. He stepped in front of the window and looked down at her. “What the hell are you talking about?” he said. “Didn't you take the pills I gave you?"
"You son of a bitch!” Another rock whizzed past his head. “I won't take them! If I am pregnant, I'll have the baby, whether you want it or not!"
David's heart soared at her words. He glanced around the room and quickly grabbed the briefs he'd left laying on the floor near his bed. He waved them in the window, a makeshift white flag. “Hold your fire!” he yelled. “We need to talk."
He peeked out the window in time to see a rock drop from April's hand. He raced down the stairs and opened the door. “Get in here,” he said.
April's eyes narrowed as she walked past him. “Don't think you can talk me out of it."
David closed the door and approached her. When he placed a hand on her shoulder, she ducked away. “Don't touch me."
He splayed his hands. “All right,” he said. “I won't touch you. But you have to explain what you said out there."
"What more is there to say?” she asked. “I thought I was pretty clear."
David took a deep breath. “Well, think of me as dim,” he said. “Explain."
April turned away from him and squared her shoulders. “After what you did to me today, I sat and cried for hours. But then it occurred to me that you're as responsible as I am. If I am pregnant, having the child is my decision.” She whisked around, her eyes sparkling with anger.
"You want to have my child?” David asked. “What about the conversation Jeff overheard?"
April frowned. “I remember Jeff showing up out of the blue and I wondered what he'd heard,” she admitted. “But if he told you I wanted to abort a child, he clearly didn't hear all of the conversation. My friend suggested the morning after pill and I told her I could never do that."
David's heart sang with hope. “Really?"
"Really,” she replied. “However, you clearly don't want children. So I'm willing to raise the child on my own if you can't accept the responsibility."
David shook his head. It was his turn to confess. “You have no idea just how much I want a child,” he said. “In fact, my wife,” he hesitated, “I mean, my ex-wife, said she wanted children too. But she'd been lying to me all along. When she'd discovered she was pregnant, she had an abortion."
April's face fell. “Oh.” She was clearly searching for something more to say. “My God, David. I'm so sorry."
David continued. “She wouldn't have told me about it at all. But two days after, she hemorrhaged. I found her in the bathroom in a pool of blood. I rushed her to the ER. She almost died."
"So she finally admitted it to you?"
David laughed sarcastically. “Oh no,” he said. “I didn't find out until her doctor showed up. He thought I knew about it. In fact, she told him I was all for it. He told me."
April took a step toward him. “No wonder you thought the worst of me when Jeff told you what he'd heard. David, I'm so sorry."
David stepped back, wanting to stay out of her reach. “Look,” he said, “I have feelings for you. Maybe it's love but I'm not sure. But I do know I want to explore them further."
"I do too."
"But we don't know what the future will bring."
She nodded. “I know."
"Odds are you're not pregnant."
She nodded again.
"But, April, if you are, I want to be a part of our child's life."
When April took a step closer to him, he didn't resist. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her against him. “I told you I loved you two nights ago,” she said. “I meant it."
David smiled down at her. “Then let's see what the future brings for us, shall we?"
"Yes!"
David covered her mouth with his. God, he hoped she was pregnant. But if she wasn't, there'd be many more opportunities in their lifetime.
There was only one thing he knew for certain. He would always be April's fool.
