  She should have come with me. We would’ve been alright. We’d have gotten out of Middleford and instead of Gaby and me, it’d be me and Eliza travelling the top end. We would have been happy.

  The dog still follows me. No matter where I go it always turns up, appearing in the dead of night to watch over me. But it just hangs back in the shadows now, beaten. I made my choice. Not today, dog. Not today.
