Afterwards, when Sarah had left with Burke, Hall pushed Grace right out along the harbour wall, and stood, looking out to sea. He knew what Burke had meant, had known as soon as he’d said it, but he couldn’t agree. Life wasn’t just a waiting game. Not while his daughters were in the world. One of them was right here, and the other two girls were both in their respective university towns. Maybe they were in the library, maybe they were doing their summer jobs, and maybe they were doing the kind of things that would make a dad feel uncomfortable. But Hall didn’t care about any of that. He smiled, fished his phone out of his pocket and dialled Jane. He wanted to hear what the ACC had said, when they’d met that morning for what the bloke insisted on calling a wash-up. But it would be good to have a DCI in the family again, he thought.
