Catching sight of her, his expression turned adoring in an instant. They hurried towards each other, eager for a morning kiss. Catching her in his arms, he spun her around before pulling her down for a kiss.
“Thank you for accepting me, my Keiko.”
“After last night, I should be the one thanking you.”
“I can’t think of anything I enjoy more than making the human sex with you.”
Smiling indulgently, she responded warmly, “It’s just sex, and I like making it with you too. What’s this I hear about dragons?”
“Miss Emily wanted to ride before we sent her back to her parents. I invited her and the mimics for breakfast and riding. I anticipated you’d be pleased by this decision.”
Patting him on the chest, she sighed happily. “You’re absolutely right. I’m thrilled to see Emily before she leaves. You know, where I come from, dragons probably mean something different.”
“Here dragons are large creatures with wings that breathe fire. They’re native to the Krylon home world but I enjoy breeding them.”
Before she could argue the logic of dragon back riding, the door chimed. Darn opened it and ushered in Emily and a bunch of insectoid mimics. All the mimics looked totally different. Some looked almost totally Shardon and others almost entirely insectoid.
Emily skipped over to her and gave her a hug. Stepping back, she gave a little fist bump. “We’re riding dragons this morning. Is that totally awesome or what?”
Without batting an eye, Keiko responded, “No, that isn’t what I’d consider awesome at all.”
Bumping hips with her, she teased, “Don’t be a scaredy cat. Where’s your sense of adventure?”
Shar interjected diplomatically, “We eat first, and then ride. Come. Darn has prepared enough food to feed a small army.”
Keiko noticed that Emily had a very good relationship with the mimics. They acted like teens. Emily was a little mature for her age and the clones were rather immature. They picked over the food, traded items around, and joked with Shar Jalon about being in charge of planetary defenses. It was humbling to see the new clones just enjoying their freedom.
As they were finishing up, Shar’s com beeped. “If you’re finished with your meal, we have dragons on the field.”
Leaping from their seats, the youngsters were gifted with the enthusiasm and energy Keiko could barely remember possessing. Christopher stuffed a strange dough ball in his mouth and trotted off behind Emily.
Shar pulled her along with one hand and they caught up with the youngsters in a huge field on his property. Sure enough, there were a couple of dozen warriors and almost twenty snorting, stamping dragons. They were exactly the ones from Earth lore, except they appeared to fawn over their Shardon handlers.
Christopher and Emily approached first, choosing a large dragon with red scales. Christopher froze and took on the qualities of the dragon, appearing like a miniature version of the fearsome creature. The animal snorted and tossed its head from side to side, clearly not amused by his antics. Emily smoothed her hand down his nose, and whispered sweet nothings in its ear. The huge beast literally curled itself around her tiny form as if claiming her for his own.
Shar sighed. “I suppose, we’ll be sending that one to Sylon.”
“Why?”
“That is what we call the melding position. Dragons claim their person, not vice versa. That is why you’ll be riding my mount today.”
Hopping up on her tiptoes, she kissed his chin. “Thanks, big guy.”
It took a bit of kerfuffling but eventually, the core handlers got everyone mounted on a dragon, as they gave limited directions for staying in the strap-on saddles. After all the safety harnesses were locked into place, Shar mounted his dragon black and pulled her, depositing her behind him like she weighed nothing at all.
For her part, Keiko just tried not to freak out in front of the children. One of the handlers strapped her in securely at Shar’s back and the huge beast flapped its wings. If she had to guess, Keiko would estimate his wingspan to be around seventy or eighty feet wide. Strangely enough, it wasn’t the fact that they were dragons that bothered her. After seeing the creatures, she got that they were just animals. They looked and felt like lizards, only huge ones that flew. What scared the ever-loving crap out of her was their size. Each food had four prominent claws, each of which was roughly the size of her thigh.
A hand came out and landed on her leg as they lifted from the ground. Shar glanced back over his shoulder. He wore a black form suit and thick, black gloves. She could see that he was relaxed and happy, as he gripped the reins. “Trust me, my Keiko. All will be well. Enjoy the fresh air on your face and the sights of my beautiful world.”
Nodding, she slipped her arms around his waist and relaxed. This was her new life. As strange and thrilling as it was, she knew soon it wouldn’t seem so amazing when she got used to it. Now was the time to really enjoy it. As the animal soared high above the city, she admired the beautiful spirals atop the tall, glass buildings. Everything on the Shardon home world was new and interesting.
Emily’s dragon flew up beside them. Keiko could see how happy the young girl was and it struck her that just a year ago, she was scavenging on a dying planet to survive. Now, thanks to aliens like Shar and her new stepfather Koal, she lived a whole new life. One she clearly loved.
Snuggling closer to Shar, she allowed the sheer joy of the moment to saturate her very soul. This was the most amazing life she could imagine living. They flew for an hour or so, before Shar led them back to his estate. Unfortunately, her shuttle waited to transport her to a Candorian freighter for her return trip. Preoccupied with coddling her dragon, Emily paid little attention to them until she ran over to say her goodbyes.
Keiko knew Shar didn’t dismount because he wanted to fly some more. Instead, he leaned down to speak to the little one. “Best think up a good name for your dragon. If you can get the freighter to wait, I’ll have him boxed for you to take with you.”
The little one squealed with delight.
Shar’s voice turned serious. “I’m sure I don’t need to explain to you what a terrible idea removing him from stasis aboard the Candorian vessel would be. He’d panic in the confined space and they’d be forced to put him down.”
“Oh, heck no. I’m not that kind of stupid.”
“I should certainly think not, my little friend. Now off with you.” Shar made a strange hand gesture that looked like the sign for a box and pointed to the red dragon then Emily. The handler nodded and headed over to the creature.
They sat on their dragon watching as the little girl’s shuttle took off, the mimics were taken towards the stables for a tour and the field was cleared of the other dragons. When it was just the two of them, Shar sat for bit enjoying the view of his property before speaking.
“Do you think you could be happy here with me, my Keiko?”
Teasing, she wiggled her fingers in his ribs. “Is that a trick question? I’ve already told you that you aren’t getting rid of me, so don’t even try it.”
Glancing behind him, she could see the happiness stamped clearly on his face. “Then you’re mine.”
His dragon snorted and clawed up the ground. He reached down to pet the monster’s neck. “I mean she’s ours. Always so territorial, aren’t you, my friend?”
“Can he understand you?”
“Most beasts understand when their master speaks. Marnok sometimes gets confused about which of us is the master.”
She could have sworn the animal snorted his disdain at Shar. Their interaction was either confusing or she was reading too much into it. “Well, I can easily see why he’s confused about that. Marnok is clearly the biggest and best dragon on the planet. He totally kicks ass.”
To her surprise, the creature reared back, let out a deafening roar, and a ten-foot flame of fire shot from his mouth. Instead of being frightened, she felt totally liberated. Wrapping her arms around Shar’s waist again, she shouted,
It’s time to fly, with my two favorite guys.”
The dragon slowly rose from the ground and soared through the air, picking up speed as he flew. Dipping down, she realized they were following the coastline. The jet-black sand met the sapphire-blue waters in a brilliant display of crashing waves. Seeing the bright orange sun climbing in the morning sky, Keiko knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that she’d finally found her place. If there was such a thing as happily ever after, this was definitely hers.
