Now You See Her

His hurt expression eased as a hint of excitement crept into his eyes. “So it worked?”
“Like a charm.”
“Send me your report as soon as possible. I want to see the data analysis.”
“Well, uh . . .” Deep breath here. “We didn’t record any data.”
“What? Why not?”
“The decision to deploy the system was sort of spur of the moment. I didn’t have time to set up test protocols.”
The spark of excitement fizzled. His face crumpled. I had to carry that look of disappointment with me for the rest of the day.
It hung over me like a dark cloud when I met Mitch for dinner after work. A hearty blue cheese and mushroom burger with a side order of cheese fries dissipated some of the cloud. Mitch blew the rest of it away when we adjourned to my apartment.
“Diane and the kids have had a rough time of it,” he commented as we caught the tail end of a news update on the sensational case. “It’ll probably get rougher before it’s all over. I feel sorry for them.”
“Mmmm.”
They say confession is good for the soul. It didn’t win me any Brownie points with my boss earlier but I figured I might as well make a clean breast of things.
“I got the impression Diane feels something for you, too.”
“Yeah,” he said with a careless shrug. “I picked up that vibe.”
“Kind of ticked me off.”
“I picked up on that, too.”
“So?”
“So why don’t we turn off the TV?” His smile slow and lazy, he worked the buttons on my ABU shirt. “Let me show you why you had nothing to be ticked about.”
“Sounds like a plan to me.”
Grinning, I hit the remote and went into his arms.
