“I don’t think there’ll be any more. We could see a sheer wall of rock ahead that looked like it was the end of the cave system, but we didn’t want to take any more time on this trip to look farther. One more expedition should complete our mission,” said Gideon.
“We’re only a few days off finishing the ladder here, too, so it’s all coming together well. Your people have been a great help to me,” said Joel, smiling specifically at Greg.

Yuri, Reuben, Kenan, and Ethan went to the rock wall and walked as far as it went. It was sheer for maybe one hundred feet, with no way of climbing it without specialist climbing equipment. If there was clean water up there, the Edu-Tech people certainly wouldn’t have found it.

“I think that’d be sensible. A bit of added protection,” said Greg.
“Okay. We’ll add it to the list with the bamboo plants and anything else you need. Someone will likely come in about a year, unless you ask for help before then. You can give us items to put on your shopping list as well, too. What about a protein source, or do you plan to stay vegetarian?”
“We did enjoy the meat you shared with us, but we sort of decided to stick with grains, fruits, and vegetables as it’s more achievable. It’s possible we could set up a fish pond or chickens though, I guess. There’s plenty of water for fish and no predators for chickens,” said Sharon.
“No rush, you have the communication unit now, so just let us know what you decide.”
Then it was time to pack up to leave. Greg had arranged to remain behind with Sharon, and everyone agreed that was a perfect arrangement for everyone. It was a long day, but they reached the safe place, with no alarms on the way. Team C would meet them in the entry cave and help guard the helicopter and retrieve the unused caches. It was also planning to overfly the south end of the limestone cave complex, videotaping the ground, in the hope of identifying where the little homestead was.
Ruth found she settled back into the walking easily, always alert, always a little nervous, but with an underlying security that the men knew what they were doing and would protect her. She also had the feeling that Edu-Tech was no more, that the group had either self-destructed or possibly left. The way they were wasting their resources, they’d have long ago run out of food and water, and with no other clean rivers and no signs of recent campsites, although it was possible they were around, her intuition told her they’d gone.
She also spent a lot of time thinking about her men. How amazing that the end of the world as she’d known it could have brought her happiness and love. It was an insane suggestion, but it’d happened. Jed, Lucas, and Yuri loved her, and she loved them in return. There may be other expeditions, there may be changes, and weirdness and god knows what happening, but their love was sold and secure. They would survive.
