  Her life in Sweetwater was great, by all accounts. It didn’t take long for word to get around that she was good with numbers, finding plenty of clients in the shifter-rich town. The cabin was completely fixed up now as well and Jessy had never felt more at home sanywhere.

  Turning down the stove, she left the food on to keep it warm and plopped down on the couch, holding her huge belly as she did. Colt Junior, as she lovingly liked to call him, had been kicking up a storm in there lately, and all she wanted to do was lie down and have Colt Senior rub her feet.

  He was supposed to be home any minute now, so her dream was close to being a reality. With a tired sigh, Jessy perked up her ears to listen to any signs of trouble from Lana’s room, but all she could make out was her giving her stuffed animals battle orders.

  The rumble of a car engine outside almost made her get off the couch to go and greet Colt, but she was like a turtle stuck on its back and didn’t feel like struggling to dig herself out of the pillows she had sunk into.

  “I might just stay here forever,” Jessy grumbled to herself with a sigh.

  “Daddy!” a high-pitched voice exclaimed before the patter of small feet erupted from Lana’s room.

  The little girl was in Colt’s arms as soon as he was through the door, and Jessy craned her neck to see him lift her into his lap and swing her around.

  “Hey, rascal, what have you been up to? Not giving mommy too much trouble, I hope?”

  Lana stuck out her chin and shook her head, offended by the mere notion of her being anything other than a perfect little angel.

  “Okay, I’ll see if mommy agrees,” he grinned, setting Lana down.

  She giggled and ran back to her room as Colt made his way to the couch. His familiar scent wrapped around Jessy as he sat down next to her, placing a hand on her stomach.

  “Hello, son,” he murmured, before turning to Jessy. “And how’s my favorite grumpy pregnant lady?” he asked, planting a kiss on her lips before she could respond.

  “I’m not grumpy,” she protested as they broke apart, her body tingling from the contact.

  Colt grinned, raising a brow at her while rubbing circles on her belly, and she rolled her eyes at him.

  “Okay, I guess I’ve been a little grumpy. But you try carrying a little bear inside you for four months and we’ll see how you feel,” she said, crossing her arms.

  “You are amazing and I love you,” he whispered, trailing kisses up her arm and making her forget all about her grumbling. “And I think you’re cute when you’re all huffy. Reminds me of Lana,” he chuckled, pulling her feet into his lap.

  His hands went to work, kneading and rubbing, and she let her head fall back, feeling relaxation sweep over her. He knew all the right things to say and do to make her feel better and the life they had built here was more than she could ever have imagined for herself.

  She looked down at the modest diamond on her finger and smiled, remembering the day she’d said ‘yes’ to the man of her dreams. They’d only known each other for a couple of months before he popped the question, and yet she didn’t even have to think about her answer.

  I guess when you know, you know, as cheesy as it sounds.

  But planning the wedding had been put on hold when they found out Jessy was pregnant. She wanted to have her whole family, meaning the one still growing in her belly, so they decided to enjoy being engaged for a while and celebrate after Colt Junior was born.

  With the house uncharacteristically quiet and Colt massaging her swollen feet, she was all but ready to doze off until the significance of today hit her.

  “Oh! How did the meeting go?” she asked, sitting up and staring at the handsome man she could soon call her husband.

  It hadn’t been long after the Zane debacle that Ethan Grimpaw, Alpha of the local clan, had come to speak with Colt. Sweetwater’s sheriff was retiring after thirty years of service, and Ethan thought Colt could be the perfect replacement. It started out as a temporary gig, to see how the other officers reacted to someone new.

  Today was the day they would finally make it permanent, unless someone could come up with a better candidate. Jessy might have been a little biased, but she couldn’t imagine there was someone better suited for the job. As far as she knew, all the other officers felt the same.

  “It’s official,” Colt declared with a flourish. “You are looking at the new sheriff of Sweetwater.”

  Throwing her hands around Colt’s neck, Jessy squeezed tight, smiling against his skin. If there was anyone who deserved to have all his dreams and aspirations come true, it was Colt.

  “Congratulations,” she whispered, as he took her face in his hands.

  “Thank you. Getting the job is great, but you know what I’m even more excited about? Giving Lana a little brother and continuing to build our family. Waking up next to you and knowing you will be my wife. I just want you to know that,” he said, and Jessy couldn’t help the tears that sprung to her eyes.

  Must be the pregnancy hormones, she reasoned, dabbing at her eyes.

  She replied with a kiss, pouring all her love and affection into it. Colt’s strong arms encircled her, making her feel warm and safe. Their life together was only beginning, and she couldn’t wait to see what adventures lay ahead.

  “It would be if someone would just take my goddamn order,” he grumbled, running a hand through his hair.

  The bell above the diner’s door rung out and Maisy flitted past him with a worried look, but he couldn’t really take in any of it. Not when all he could think of was how angry he felt.
