  big bluestem - Andropogon gerardii V., an eight to sixteen foot tall perennial grass of the deep coal black glacial soils of the Great Strah on the central Eastern Continent, where it is the dominant keystone vegetation, forming heavily rooted sods which are nearly impossible to penetrate with an ordinary walking plough. Its long tough stems are ideal for thatching and are used by the Gwaelic Elves of the Strah for rooves and all manner of basketry. Though there are many places throughout the Strah where one can easily make out the heads of people walking through the grass, there are just as many places where the grass will swallow up and completely hide a rider astride a unicorn from the eyes of another rider on a unicorn. It is the chief forage for the large grazing animals of the Strah, including, auroch, Strah elk and two species of deer, all of which are feed for the strike falcon, the chief predator of the Great Strah.

It is amongst the oldest living things, with some trees having been found with over 16,000 annual rings. The wood is so dense that trees felled next to water have been known to sink as though their trunks were made of stone. oid complex which includes caffeine and other phytochemicals, some of which may induce DNA repair.
