  “I’m not Carrie.”

“I know.” He kissed the tip of her nose. “Thank heavens, for that.” Then his lips moved to her mouth and dispelled any doubts she might have had that he might have mistaken her for anyone else. “It’s you I love, deeply and completely. Will you marry me, Jill?”

She searched his face and saw only love shining in his eyes. She let the joy of finally coming home flow through her. “Yes, yes, I will,” she whispered softly. “I think I fell in love with you the first time you smiled at me.”

As they gazed at each other in a kind of wonderment, she warned him, “This is the only chance you’re going to get to change your mind.”

“And give all this up?” When his lips touched hers, he kissed her with the passionate demand of a lover. His embrace tightened and the heat of his body spiraled into hers. She responded by giving herself to him, freely, without guile or pretense. As they made love, all loneliness was forgotten. The miracle of finding each other was the only reality. There was no world but theirs, a new beginning to be explored, and a future filled with whispered promises.

Satiated with love, she rested quietly in his arms, enjoying a deep sense of belonging. As languid thoughts of a wedding and honeymoon brought a smile to her lips, she decided that the main room of the house would be perfect for the ceremony. Randy could give her away. “My son will be beside himself when we tell him the news,” she said, smiling.

“He’s a smart one.” Hal chuckled. “Want to bet he’s going to demand a horse of his own? I know he’s fond of the small dappled roan he’s been riding. That’s the one he’s going to claim, you wait and see.”

The pleasure in his voice made Jill smile. “I think Randy wanted to play matchmaker all along. He’ll probably say, ‘I told you so’ when we tell him the news.”

“Too bad some of us are slow learners,” Hal conceded, grinning.

“But when we get it right, we get it right,” she assured him, the rosy flush of lovemaking still on her cheeks.

He laughed and pulled her close. “What do you think? Shall we get a little better acquainted before our boy arrives?”

Soft, supple and waiting lips lifted to his were his only answer.
