Lucky For You

  His mouth twisted into a half-smile. “I . . . I tried to change you. I shouldn’t have.”

“You said you were doing it for my own good.”

“I wanted everyone else to like you, to see you the way I do. But I went about it all wrong. I tried to change you, but they should have been the ones to change and accept you. You’re proud of the way you are, and I am too. So . . . I’m sorry for that.”

Jordan stood up and walked backward, pulling him along, until they were at the door. “I’ll accept your apology. But only because you’re cute. Now, there’s this little matter of Fred.”

  “You catnapped him.”

  “He came willingly.”

  “A likely story.”

“This is his home. And you’re right, it’s mine. But I think . . . maybe there’s room for all of us.”

  “Really?”

“Plus I have a sneaking suspicion that if we join forces, we’d be able to get it for a song. I know the owner. Nice old lady. She’d cut us a deal.”

She could hear Will swallow. “You really want to live together?”

“That is usually what happens when two people buy a house.”

  “You can handle it?”

  “I . . . might be persuaded. For Fred’s sake, of course.”

“Of course.” Will pulled her close again, and she reached behind them to open the door. “You’re absolutely crazy, you know.”

  “I know.”

  “Promise you won’t change.”

“Well, lucky for you, I feel like staying the way I am.”

  “Yep. Definitely lucky for me.”
