The man looked back to the river, saw nothing, shook his head in unison with his wife, and followed her away from the disgraceful example of the wasteland their former home had become.
The bloated leaden mass traveled on, followed closely above by a silent, swirling contingent of winged sentinels. The funeral barge continued northward until being released out to sea by its guardians to disappear forever beyond the pale horizon.
