  ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

There are many people who I should probably sell my soul to in gratitude for their help.

First of all, I have to thank my parents. My mom, for literally listening to me ramble about stories for more than twenty years and always encouraging me to tell more. I would have given up a long time ago if it wasn't for her help, and honestly, what kind of sad world would that be? My pops, for telling me stories of his own and for always asking questions. How I shaped my heroes is thanks to him.

Second of all, this book would have fallen flat a year ago if it wasn't for my friends. Ria and Rory, for fleshing out the characters with me. Maliha, for endless support and endless editing and endless world building sessions and endless tears. Becca, for being proud of me before I'd written anything down. Bekka, for her work and for inspiring me to actually write a book in the first place. Cami, for her love. Jenny, for her sharp eye. Eli, for all future help.

Third of all, I wanted to thank all those professors and other nameless folk who have written with me, given me feedback, and made me an all-around better observer of the world's details. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

And finally, I would like to thank those who inspired Death's Lament: Sappho, Charles Darwin, Shakespeare, various philosophers, and all those ancient Spartan sayings that I spent a few days thinking about.
