CHAPTER 23:

  Goddess’s Will be Done

Vanessa walked through the school gates that morning, with Rex on her arm in high spirits once again. She’d done the deed the night before and ejected her father from her life. It kind of felt good being the one to abandon him, rather than the other way around.

He’d begged, he’d pleaded, but Vanessa had determined to remain staunch and stuck to her guns. He got just what he deserved and Rex backed her up completely.

'You're a strong woman,' Rex said.

'Thanks for supporting me. You're so wonderful.'

'I'll always be there for you.'

  'I know you will.'

Tucker trotted along the path and greeted them. ‘Hi guys!’

‘Hi, Tucker,’ Vanessa said. ‘You seem in good spirits. Should we be concerned about that?’

‘I am in good spirits. I got my job back.’

‘You did?’ Vanessa asked, trying not to sound surprised.

‘Yeah! Somebody told Rita, my boss the truth, that Rod Williams left me in town on Friday. She sacked him on the spot and then rang me later to offer me my job back. She was really apologetic and even offered me a raise.’

Rex smiled wryly at Vanessa. ‘That’s great news, Tucker,’

‘But talk about freaky,’ Tucker continued. ‘The cops came around to my place after he got fired. Apparently, he went ape and smashed up the bar. Then he took off. They thought he might have come around to my place to take out his frustrations out on me.’

‘Wow,’ Vanessa said, surprised for the first time during the conversation. ‘And did he?’

‘No, they tracked him down later at one of his friend’s place. He’d calmed down a bit by then.’

‘Well I guess everything’s sorted out then?’

‘Yep. I just wonder who reported him.’

‘I bet you do,’ Vanessa said. ‘I’m wondering the same thing.’ She turned and winked at Rex.

‘I guess someone up there likes me,’ Tucker said, glancing up at the sky.

‘Yeah well that someone upstairs doesn’t seem to discriminate.’

  Tucker strolled away.

Both Vanessa and Rex burst out laughing.

‘It seems the Daughter of Aphrodite answered his prayers,’ Rex said.

‘Yeah huh. You know, that is kind of warped when you think about it. I just hope I haven’t endorsed his belief that I’m a goddess.’

‘But Nessa, you are a goddess. I can vouch for that myself.’

She giggled and delivered him a friendly thump on the shoulder. ‘Don’t you start. I’m no goddess.’

  ‘You are.’

  ‘Nuh uh.’

  ‘Yeah huh’

  ‘Nuh uh!’

‘Yeah huh. I just wish you’d told me you were going to talk to Rod and record his confession. You took a risk.’

‘No risk. I’m a goddess remember? I could just smite him with lightening if I wanted to.’

Rex shook his head and chuckled.
