“Even after all the things I’ve done? Took your book and tried to make you choose? Left you on that damned quay?”

“Let’s not pretend when I saw you again I didn’t do things too. I did everything to keep you away, because I was terrified you’d bring me pleasure and that would be a betrayal of that moment. And then I thought I had to keep you there because I was terrified of what you could do to me.”

  “Me?”

“You. Only now I know I was wrong not to go with you in Genoa. Not to see. But now, well, now that’s why Lady Margaret may love Fortune, but she doesn’t want us producing another Beaumont heir. I trust I am making myself clear. I don’t want you to remove yourself. I don’t want you ever to do that again.”

Standing on her tiptoes, she pressed her mouth to his. Although she’d noticed the taste of rum, it hadn’t seemed quite so strong before. He’d been drinking heavily. And she was only glad she had been able to find him, although she would have never stopped looking.

  “You went and told her?”

  She nodded. “I did.”

“You’re damned crazy. Why did you do that? What have I got to offer you?”

“Everything. I don’t care where we go. I don’t care what we do. I actually think if Lady Margaret goes away and thinks about this, I may be a wanted woman.”

A wicked smile lit his face. She knew exactly what he was thinking, even if it didn’t match what she was.

  “So what’s rule twelve?”

“It can’t any of it be in front of our children or Susan. Two of whom are waiting down at the shore. And the third we are going to fetch. I’m going to set it all down. Now, make your mark.”

  “My mark?”

Someone jostled Flint as they passed and he lowered his head. He didn’t say a word and neither did she, though she knew when his mouth met hers where they were going and what he intended. The future, she realized happily.

With him at her side. There was nothing else she wanted.

  ~ About the Author ~

As a child Shehanne Moore loved Robert Louis Stevenson because she was as sickly as him. So she read all his stories. Then she thought she might write some herself, which her family, being realistic, used for fire-lighters and other things, although her neighbors did enjoy the Hore House Mystery.

Shehanne is a Scot, living in Scotland, with her husband and her two daughters. When not writing intriguing historical romance, she fantasizes about cleaning the house, plays the odd instrument and loves what in any other country, would not be defined, as hill-walking.

Shehanne is thrilled to be joining Etopia Press for her first book, The Unraveling of Lady Fury.
