Fawn suddenly felt heat burning between her thighs. It was a feeling she had never experienced before, a confusing feeling that left her wanting more. She pressed herself closer to the warmth of Ash’s body as the wind whipped around them. She felt his hands working at the straps that encircled every limb of her body. The blade sheathes fell to the ground with a clatter, yet Fawn didn’t care. All she cared about was feeling his touch upon her skin.
He reached for the hem of her tunic and pulled it up quickly over her head. Her own hands found their way under his shirt, and she felt the hard expanse of his abs beneath her fingertips. Feeling the need to see his body, she grabbed hold of the bottom of his shirt and pulled it up. He lifted his arms and leaned forward to help her pull it off. The skin of his upper body was taut over rippling muscles. He wrapped one arm around her waist and pulled her up into his arms.
Her legs wrapped around him as he placed his other hand on the back of her head and kissed her so passionately that she felt her head begin to spin.
For a moment she was disorientated, unable to tell whether she was up or down, and then she realised that he had lowered her down onto her back in the leaf mould that covered the forest floor. He lay on top of her, pressing his naked abs against her stomach. His stone hard erection pressed between her thighs and the need for him only grew. Her hands skimmed down his sides, reaching for the button that held his trousers up. Pulling at the button, she felt it pop open, and slipped her hand inside his trousers. He groaned as she took hold of him, gripping him tightly in her fingers before stroking him gently.
His own hand came down between her legs and he began to stroke her sex with his fingers flat against her. She gasped and found herself biting his lip as he slipped a finger inside her. The movements of his hand were slow and teasing and before long she felt that she needed him even more
She grabbed hold of his head in both her hands and pulled him down against her, kissing him with her need, tenderly biting his lip. He groaned against her lips as he removed his finger from inside her and moved his hips between hers. She gasped as she felt him push deep inside her. Her insides tightened, and she felt the knot of pleasure swirling in her stomach as he moved slowly in and out.
Their bodies shook in rhythm as they slowly grew toward their climax. When she felt him spill his seed inside her, she screamed as her own climax came to its head. Her entire body quivered and her eyes rolled back into her head, her lips gaping against his, as he breathed heavily against her mouth.
Ash suddenly grabbed hold of her hips then and flipped, turning so that she was on top of him. Her cheek came down against his chest. She could hear his heart beating fast beneath her ear, much like her own heart was pounding in her chest. In that moment she realised he may have been a different race, but there was really no difference between them at all.
“I should take you back to your family,” Ash sighed after a while. He had his arms wrapped tightly around her as though he didn’t want to let her go. “We can’t stay out here forever.” In that moment, Fawn wished that she could. She wished she could stay lying on him for the rest of her life and listen to the beating of his heart beneath her ear.
Pushing herself up off his chest she nodded and reached for her trousers. It was going to take her a few minutes to get her clothes back on along with the straps that held the sheaths for her blades. She looked at her weapons and suddenly realised something. “I have to go back for my bow and arrows.” She remembered the last time she had seen her father’s weapons was on the bank of the stream where they had encountered the other dragons
“I’ll take you back for them.”
Chapter Eight
They landed by the stream an hour after Fawn had strapped her weapons back on. Ash dropped her delicately onto her feet beside the stream before transforming to land beside her. He glanced around before telling her, “Grab your things quickly. We need to get out of here before a patrol goes by.”
“A patrol?” Fawn asked with a raised eyebrow as she wondered what he could possibly be talking about.
“Dragons scout this mountain to keep it out of human hands. It’s one of the last places we have left,” Ash explained, still glancing from side to side as if he expected to see someone jump out of the bushes at any moment.
Fawn turned to the stream and looked both ways in search of her father’s bow. She began to walk upstream in the hopes of finding it. Before long she realised that it wasn’t there. Every pebble and blade of grass started to look the same as she realised she had lost the one thing that had been passed down from generation to generation in her family. Her heart dropped as she thought of what she was going to have to say to her father when she returned home.
“Looking for this?” a familiar voice sounded behind her and she jumped, whipping around to see her mother appear from the bushes. Ash who had followed behind her suddenly began to growl as though he was an animal. Fawn took hold of his hand in an attempt to calm him.
Her mother held out her husband’s bow, and Fawn felt a little relief wash over her before she realised that she was now in an even stickier situation. Her mother was staring at Ash over her shoulder as though she wanted to rip his head from his shoulders.
“Please return my daughter to me now beast, or I will be forced to put my blade through your heart.” Liv spoke with such hatred that it was almost visibly steaming off her lips.
“Your daughter was never taken from you,” Ash snapped back. “She went off her own free will, and she will return of her own free will. I am no kidnapper.”
“Your kind are all kidnappers, thieves and murderers. I will not believe a single word that comes out of your mouth,” Liv glared at him before turning her eyes on her daughter, “Fawn, do the right thing. Put a knife through his heart, and let us be on our way.”
Fawn was about to yell at her mother to stop talking like that when the sound of wings beating the air above them could be heard. All three of them turned their eyes to the sky as the same green dragon that had appeared the day before slowly lowered himself down onto the ground. Another two followed. This time they did not remain in the sky. Instead they transformed, landing behind their leader with a soft thud as their feet hit the ground.
“Ash, we have been waiting for you to resurface,” the bald, scarred man spoke in the same animalistic voice he had spoken in the day before. It sent a shiver down Fawn’s spine. “And here I find you fraternising with humans again
“A dragon must not harm a human,” Ash told the leader. “Aren’t those the rules?” Fawn was confused by his words. When she glanced at her mother, she could see that she was feeling the same way.
“Those are the rules every dragon follows to an extent, but when a human threatens the life of a dragon they are fair game!” the woman who stood behind the bald man stepped forward to speak. “You cannot allow these two to leave or they will return with more of their kind to wipe us from this mountain all together.”
“That will not happen,” Fawn stepped forward to meet the woman. “You have my word.”
“With all due respect, I would believe the word of a poisonous snake over the word of a human.” The female dragon glared at Fawn, angry at her forwardness.
“There is no need for any of this.” Ash shook his head and stepped up to stand beside Fawn. “We don’t have to do any of this. We can go our separate ways and nobody needs to get hurt.”
“Tell that to the people going hungry because you’ve stolen their sheep, and the mother crying at night for the child you stole while it was playing in the corn fields,” Liv snapped at him, her fingers tightening around her husband’s bow until they were bone white.
“I do not know who did those things, but I can assure you it was not me or any of the dragons here,” Ash told her gently. “My people do not harm humans unless they are defending themselves, and we do not hunt on human dwellings. I have never tasted sheep. I stick to the deer and wild lions that roam these mountains.”
“Mum, we don
t have to live this way anymore,” Fawn shook her head as she spoke. “We can go home and tell everyone the truth. Nobody else has to die.”
“Tell that to the three year old who is orphaned because a dragon killed both of her parents last week,” Liv snarled at her daughter and, for a moment, Fawn couldn’t help but think how much she seemed like an animal. “I’m sure she’d be very happy to hear that her parents’ killer will not be brought to justice.”
“Would you kill the three year old child for the sins of her parents had they been murderers?” the bald man spoke up then. Fawn had to admit his words were very convincing. She saw her mother’s expression changed and wondered whether he may have been able to sway her. “Would you allow me to kill your daughter for all the dragons that have died at the end of your blades?” he continued. “That’s right Olivia Dragonslayer. I know exactly who you are,” he took a step forward, and Fawn’s breath caught in her throat. “You have killed hundreds of my people yet you have not harmed me personally, and so I will not raise a finger to you.”
“They are right, Liv.” Another voice came from behind Fawn’s mother then. She could just barely see over her shoulder as Alec appeared from the trees and walked forward to stand beside his sister-in-law. “I’m tired of fighting and seeing no end in sight. Maybe this should be the end.”
“How can you say that?” Liv snapped at him, “Do you not remember the state we left your brother in? Do you not remember smelling the scent of death on him?” Fawn’s throat constricted further. She had not realised how badly her father had been hurt. Could he really have been dying?
“My brother was injured while trying to kill a dragon. You cannot expect any creature not to fight back when in risk of losing its life.” Alec spoke words so true that Fawn could see it sinking into her mother as her eyes dulled away from the angry fire that had burned inside her moments before. “It’s time to go home, Liv.” With that Alec held out his hand to Liv and waited for her to take hold of it.
Before she did so, she turned to look in Fawn’s direction with a look of hope in her eyes, “Are you coming?”
“Go,” Fawn replied, “I will follow you.” Liv didn’t look convinced though she sighed, took hold of Alec’s hand, and allowed him to lead her away from the clearing. Fawn turned to Ash who nodded toward the three dragons who still stood opposite them. The bald man bowed his head back and a look passed between them before he surged up into the air, transforming as he went.
Fawn watched him go, amazed to see how he shifted and changed before flapping his wings and disappearing over the treetops within seconds. As though following a silent command, the other two dragons jumped, shifting their shape, before following their leader out of sight.
Chapter Nine
Ash turned to face Fawn as soon as the clearing was empty. He took hold of her hands and lifted them to press them against his chest. “It seems you have saved my life twice now.” He smiled down at her as he placed his hands on her hips and drew her close to him.
Fawn could not help but smile back at him as she felt his heart beating beneath the palm of her hand. “We may have just saved hundreds of lives,” she shrugged her shoulders trying to take the weight out of her words. “Your people could have just as easily killed me and my mother before my uncle turned up.” Ash quickly shook his head as she spoke.
“I would never have let that happen,” he told her gently. “I would have taken a knife to the heart before allowing them to harm one hair on your head.” With his words he lifted his hand and stroked a strand of brown hair back from her face. The small gesture was enough to send Fawn’s heart racing, and she was ready when he leaned down to kiss her. She kissed him back enjoying the taste of him as he swept his tongue along her lips. She parted them allowing his tongue to travel into her mouth. Her own tongue came forward and they danced together, toying with each other, swirling around as Ash brought his hands up along her ribs.
Fire lit in her veins as she felt his hands cup her breasts. Even through the tough leather of her tunic she could feel the electricity of his touch. Every inch of her skin itched with the need for him. A heat burned so hot between her legs that she almost ripped her own trousers off.
Sensing her need, Ash reached down and popped the button of her trousers before pulling them down over her knees. Her feet slipped easily out of her boots as he cupped his hand between her legs and began to rub gently.
Fawn reached for the front of his trousers and found that he was hard beneath her hand. She rubbed gently, and he groaned deep in his throat as she kissed him even more tenderly.
His free hand came up to the back of her head and his fingers laced through her hair as he tilted her head to the side, exposing the soft flesh of her throat. For a moment an odd sense of fear pulsed through Fawn at the thought that he was going to bite her. Then she felt the soft, plushness of his lips against her skin and the thought was forgotten. She tilted her head, further enjoying the feel of his lips, his tongue licking her, and his teeth nibbling her flesh, moving slowly down her throat to her collarbone.
Feeling her way along his body, she undid the button of his trousers and reached inside to take hold of his erection in the palm of her hand. Stroking gently, she felt his groans rumbling in his chest. He began to push her backward, forcing her to move with him as he walked toward the nearest tree.
The trunk was rough against her back as he pushed her up against it. For a moment it was uncomfortable, and she longed to push him away, but then in the next moment she didn’t care. He forced her legs open with his knee and within moments he was inside her again. Her heart pounded and her lips parted in a gasp as he rammed himself deep inside her. The knot of pleasure tightened in her stomach as he pulled out to push himself back in again.
He continued to grip her hair, pulling her head back so that he could kiss her throat and breasts. He held her ribs in his free hand, and she could feel him shaking as though he was barely managing to control himself. Just knowing that he was so close to climax brought Fawn closer to her own. Her eyes rolled back in her head, and she gasped loudly as she pushed her hips toward his, needing to feel him deeper inside her.
They came together as they had at the top of the mountain. Their bodies quivered as they melted into each other. Fawn felt as though she was exploding with pleasure as she dug her nails into his shoulders, gripping hold of him so that he could not pull away too soon. He growled deeply as he erupted inside her, and the sound only heightened her pleasure.
They grew still, yet Ash did not pull away from her. He remained inside her, pressing her up against the tree with his head against her shoulder. He kissed her soft flesh gently before lifting his head to look at her. “I never in a million years thought that I would mate with a human,” he told her in a soft whisper. Fawn’s cheeks flared with embarrassment as she heard his words.
She had never thought to be in the position either, yet there they were entwined as one. Now she could not imagine how she had ever lived without it. She could not imagine going home and finding a human man who made her feel the same way he did. She could not imagine marrying a human man the way her parents had intended.
Her life was no longer on the path it had once been, and there was no way she could look back. All she could do was look forward and pray that things would work out for the best.
“Will you do something for me?” she asked him, as he slowly pulled out of her and pulled her gently away from the tree to hold her more firmly in his arms.
“Anything,” he whispered and in that one word, Fawn heard a promise that she knew he would keep for the rest of his life.
“Let me fly with you one last time before I have to go home?” Fawn asked him. She needed to feel the wind streaming through her hair and feel the freeness that she felt in the air one more time before she found herself earth bound forever.
“You can fly with me anytime you like,” Ash told her. Fawn was relieved to know that he intended to see her again though she was worried that
it might not be for some time. She decided to push that thought away and focus on the present.
Pulling herself reluctantly from his arms, she leaned over and picked up her trousers, pulling them on as she had the last time they had made love. She heard Ash move and when she looked up he was buttoning up his trousers and straightening his shirt.
Chapter Ten
Ash soared higher and higher. The clouds enveloped them and Fawn closed her eyes enjoying the feel of the wind stroking her face. She clutched onto the spikes that ran along his spine, still feeling the fear of falling, yet exhilarated by the thought that she could go anywhere in the world upon his back.
She imagined flying with him forever, never allowing her feet to touch the ground again, never having to feel the stress of what it meant to be human. She was not meant for a normal human life. She had never liked tending the chickens or cleaning their small home or even being stuck inside looking after her little sister. She knew now that she had been born to be free. She had been born to fly high above the clouds, not stuck beneath the thick leafy canopy.
Where once she had longed for a blade in her hand, she now longed for the wind in her hair and the open sky all around her. She had gone out to prove herself to her parents, yet now she had truly found herself and the woman she was meant to be.
She had Ash to thank for showing her the truth, for opening her eyes and removing the web of lies that her parents had spun. Now she was truly free to choose her own destiny.
