3. Syrians argue the commonly used term Golan Heights is a misnomer because the area consists of rolling hills, some of which lie below Israeli territory. Israelis argue that Golan Heights is accurate because they occupy a strategic position overlooking Israel. In this chapter I use the neutral term Golan.
