An Obstacle1
I was climbing up a mountain-path
with many things to do,
important business of my own,
and other people’s too,
when I ran against a Prejudice
that quite cut off the view.
My work was such as could not wait,
my path quite clearly showed,
my strength and time were limited,
I carried quite a load;
and there that hulking Prejudice
sat all across the road.
So I spoke to him politely,
for he was huge and high,
and begged that he would move a bit
and let me travel by.
He smiled, but as for moving!—
he didn’t even try.
And then I reasoned quietly
with that colossal mule:
my time was short—no other path—
the mountain winds were cool.
I argued like a Solomon;
he sat there like a fool.
Then I flew into a passion,
I danced and howled and swore.
I pelted and belabored him
till I was stiff and sore;
he got mad as I did—
but sat there as before.
And then I begged him on my knees;
I might be kneeling still
if so I hoped to move that mass
of obdurate ill-will—
as well invite the monument
to vacate Bunker Hill!
So I sat before him helpless,
in an ecstasy of woe—
the mountain mists were rising fast,
the sun was sinking slow—
when a sudden inspiration came,
as sudden winds do blow.
I took my hat, I took my stick,
my load I settled fair,
I approached that awful incubus
with an absent minded air—
and I walked directly through him,
as if he wasn’t there!

The Way Through the Woods1
They shut the road through the woods
seventy years ago.
Weather and rain have undone it again,
and now you would never know
there was once a road through the woods
before they planted the trees.
It is underneath the coppice and heath
and the thin anemones.
Only the keeper sees
that, where the ring-dove broods,
and the badgers roll at ease,
there was once a road through the woods.
Yet if you enter the woods
of a summer evening late,
when the night-air cools on the trout-ringed pools
where the otter whistles his mate,
(they fear not men in the woods,
because they see so few.)
You will hear the beat of a horse’s feet,
and the swish of a skirt in the dew,
steadily cantering through
the misty solitudes,
as though they perfectly knew
the old lost road through the woods…
but there is no road through the woods.
We and They1
Father and Mother, and Me,
Sister and Auntie say
all the people like us are We,
and every one else is They.
And They live over the sea,
while We live over the way,
but-would you believe it?—They look upon We
as only a sort of They!
We eat pork and beef
with cow-horn-handled knives.
They who gobble Their rice off a leaf,
are horrified out of Their lives;
while they who live up a tree,
and feast on grubs and clay,
(isn’t it scandalous? ) look upon We
as a simply disgusting They!
We shoot birds with a gun.
They stick lions with spears.

All good people agree,

all nice people, like Us, are We

The old priest Peter Gilligan
was weary night and day;
for half his flock were in their beds,
or under green sods lay.
Once, while he nodded on a chair,
at the moth-hour of eve,
another poor man sent for him,
and he began to grieve.
‘I have no rest, nor joy, nor peace,
for people die and die’;
and after cried he, ’God forgive!
my body spake, not I!’
He knelt, and leaning on the chair
he prayed and fell asleep;
and the moth-hour went from the fields,
and stars began to peep.

I passed a little further on and heard a peacock say:
who made the grass and made the worms
and made my feathers gay,
he is a monstrous peacock, and He waveth all the night
his languid tail above us, lit with myriad spots of light.

There was a man whom Sorrow named his Friend,
and he, of his high comrade Sorrow dreaming,
went walking with slow steps along the gleaming

The sea Swept on and cried her old cry still,
rolling along in dreams from hill to hill.
He fled the persecution of her glory
and, in a far-off, gentle valley stopping,
cried all his story to the dewdrops glistening.
But naught they heard, for they are always listening,
the dewdrops, for the sound of their own dropping.
And then the man whom Sorrow named his friend
sought once again the shore, and found a shell,
and thought, I will my heavy story tell
till my own words, re-echoing, shall send
their sadness through a hollow, pearly heart;
and my own tale again for me shall sing,
and my own whispering words be comforting,
and lo! my ancient burden may depart.
Then he sang softly nigh the pearly rim;
but the sad dweller by the sea-ways lone
changed all he sang to inarticulate moan

But that was not really it at all.
Suppose a boy steals an apple
from the tray at the grocery store,
and they all begin to call him a thief,
the editor, minister, judge, and all the people—
“A thief,” “a thief,” “a thief,” wherever he goes.
And he can’t get work, and he can’t get bread
without stealing it, why, the boy will steal.
It’s the way the people regard the theft of the apple
that makes the boy what he is.
