by A. Hart

We got married the April after Cal proposed and decided even though there was a slim chance we would just see what happens. A little while later Maxine Ethel and Mariam Lee Smith came into our lives full of laughs and so much personality. I looked down at our daughter’s both dressed in a diaper and shoes then I gave my panting husband a pointed look. I looked down at the girls and in a sweet voice said “I thought Daddy was getting you ready to go to Aunties…” Cal shrugged by me and kissed my cheek “Their mom is so much better at that…Plus we had to practice showing off their new talent.” I smiled.

Cal grabbed his coffee and took a sip. I shook my head and as I turned to go dress the girls, Cal’s phone began vibrating next to me on the counter. Cal reached for the newspaper as the girls began wandering the gated off kitchen. Cal nodded his head to the phone for me to answer it for him “If its work…I’m sleeping.” He said and winked. I laughed, shaking my head. I looked down to see who it was. Cal must have seen the fear in my eyes because as I hurried to answer it he walked towards me with concern on his face. “Megan?” I asked with worry in my voice. Her voice was calm and low “Hey Emerson. Is Cal there?” I nodded my head and then realized she couldn’t hear a nod “Yeah you want to talk to him.” She sighed “Yeah just put me on speaker.” I nodded and did as she said, setting it down on the table.

I gave both girls a baby bowl and spoon to play with as Cal took a deep breath “Megan? What’s wrong…?” She sighed “Nothing….nothing…Charlotte and I are both fine, I’m sorry I worried you, it’s just...” Cal wiped his hand down his face. “It’s just?” She blew out a breath “You know how you said if I ever needed a favor to call you?” Cal tilted his head as I stopped Mari from climbing on the chair “Yeah?” Megan snorted quietly “Well I’m calling it in.” Cal looked up at me and I knew that whatever we planned for today was no longer happening, because whatever Megan and Charlotte needed we would help them. The second Max died…to save my husband, Megan and Charlotte became our family.
