  The woman gasped. "Joe! Joe, will you come over here please?"

  From behind the bar stepped a young guy with shoulders as wide as the bar top. His steps sounded like Godzilla's.

  "Problem, Mrs. Hennessy?" Joe said.

  "This man kicked Fluffy," Mrs. Hennessy said.

  Joe looked at Don and shook his head. "I'm afraid I'm gonna have to ask—"

  "Me to leave," Don said. "Yeah, sure."

  John slammed his fist through the drywall.

  *

  John put his head in his hands.

  *

  Mary walked in and slumped in her favorite chair, an old recliner.

  *

  "You jerk!" Mary paced, waving her arms. "You have ruined any chance we had at happiness. You and your insistence on making everything a joke. Here's a clue, dude. Everything's not a joke. You're the joke. And if you don't grow up now, I'm out of here."
