  PENNY DREADFULS

Penny Dreadfuls, were a cheap popular serial literature that was produced during the 19th century in the United Kingdom which consisted of stories about the infamous exploits of detectives, criminals and supernatural entities.

The penny dreadfuls were printed on cheap wood pulp and directed to young boys or men in the working class.

Fun Fact: Boys who could not afford a penny a week formed clubs that would in turn share the cost of the publication and then they would pass the poorly made booklets from member to member. Other boys who were more enterprising would collect several consecutive parts of one story and then rent the volume to friends.

  SWEENEY TODD

This is the Penny Dreadful Isabelle is reading in her flashback/memory. The String of Pearls, A Romance –about Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street a (supposed)fictional story was first published as a penny dreadful serial from 1846–47 and was much later made into plays and movies with the most recent being Tim Burton’s version of Sweeney Todd in 2007 that starred Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd and Helen Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett.

Spoiler Alert: If you have any intention of watching the movie don’t read the rest of this.

The infamous Sweeney Todd, is a barber who murders his customers and then turns their remains into meat pies to be sold by his partner in crime Mrs. Lovett at her pie shop. Todd's barber shop is situated beside St. Dunstan's church, and is connected to Mrs. Lovett's bake shop by an underground passage. Todd kills his unwitting victims by pulling a lever while they are in his barber chair, which makes them fall backward down a revolving trapdoor and usually causes them to break their necks or skulls. If the victim survives his first attempt he will go down to the basement and polish them off by slitting their throats with a straight razor.

  RAVENHURST

I very rarely get around to sharing where I get my inspiration when writing a novel. However, where Ravenhurst is concerned, (it’s too pretty not to share) a lot of my ideas for the Gothic styled architecture and also some of the ideas for the rooms came from Biltmore estate, Vanderbilt’s Mansion located in Asheville North Carolina.

Biltmore Estate- Richard Morris Hunt designed the Biltmore Estate for George Washington Vanderbilt towards the end of 19th century. It was constructed in the style of a French Renaissance chateau. The house itself has four acres of floor space, 255 rooms. And is the largest privately owned home in the United States to date.

Fun Fact: Richard Morris Hunt also built the base for the Statue of Liberty in New York City.

The Vanderbilt family still own Biltmore Estate even though it is now open for tours. Visitors can spend the night at the Biltmore Inn or Guest Hotel.

For more information or to see pictures of this spectacular home you can visit www.biltmore.com

  PRETTY WOMAN

Pretty Woman is a 1990 Romantic Comedy that starred Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. The story was about a prostitute who inadvertently finds love with one of her customers. Edward Lewis a wealthy businessman hires Vivian Ward, a down-on-her-luck prostitute to be his escort to several social functions. During the course of her week long stay at his hotel they both start to develop feelings for one another and eventually fall in love. And although this was one of highest money makers at the box office in 1990 and to date for a Romantic Comedy it was not supposed to have a happy ending at all. Instead, it was originally intended to be a cautionary tale about class and sex with quite a different ending where Vivian Ward, the prostitute, doesn’t get the man of her dreams at all.

  BIRKIN BAG

A Birkin is a purse made by Hermès in leather and named after the actress Jane Birkin and in fashion is currently a status symbol for wealth due to the price and the use from celebrities.

The bags come in a range of sizes, colors and each is made to order with a choice of different hardware, fixtures, and or material to be made from calf leather, lizard, ostrich and saltwater crocodile skin. Each bag is also lined with goatskin.

The price of the bags range from $11,000 to $150,000 and are distributed to Hermès Boutiques with unpredictable schedules and in limited quantities, which creates an artificial scarcity making the bags more exclusive. A reputed six-year waiting list existed for the coveted bag. Hermes has since announced that the waiting list would no longer exist which would make the bag available for everyone as of 2010.

Fun Fact: in March 2013, A Birkin made from Crocodile, fitted with 18k gold, and encrusted with diamonds sold at an auction in Dallas, Texas, for an unprecedented $203,150.

Over the past 170 years of publication many famous Scientists have contributed to the articles including Albert Einstein. In the beginning, the newspaper focused on what was going on in the U.S. Patent Office and reported on a vast range of inventions, such as perpetual motion machines and in 1860 a device for buoying vessels by Abraham Lincoln and the universal joint, which is now found in almost every automobile manufactured.

Fun Fact: The newspaper Katherine finds in the library I found in a box lot at an auction and is where the idea came from for the book.

  FOX HUNTING

Fox Hunting originated sometime in the 16th century. The basis of the sport is for trained foxhounds and unarmed followers led by the master of foxhounds on foot or horseback, to track, chase and sometimes kill a fox (traditionally a red fox).

The Huntsman – is responsible for directing the hounds.

Whipper-ins –are assistants to the huntsman. They are supposed to keep the pack of dogs together and keep them from straying. To help control the pack they carry whips in American they sometimes also carry .22 revolvers loaded with rat-shot or blanks.

Pinks – is a term used for the bright red coats worn by fox-hunters.

The traditional form of fox hunting was banned in

Scotland in 2002, England and Wales in 2004

and reinforced in 2005. Still there are some modified versions which are still considered lawful. Also shooting foxes considered vermin is still allowed.
