Many of the calls we get are routine and easy to handle, but even a simple problem can be deadly for an animal if we don’t correctly diagnose it and treat it. In the picture at left, I’m running an IV of dextrose to a cow with ketosis, a common and easily treated condition that can lead to more deadly conditions when not treated quickly enough. On the right, I’m fixing the hoof of a cow that went lame.

I would like to acknowledge those who shaped my life so that this book could become a reality.

My parents, Harm and Klaasje Pol, who taught me that animals should be an integral part in everybody’s life, but became especially so in my life.

My brothers and sisters who helped raise me and especially my brother Jan and my sister Hennie, who reminded me about events and remembered things about my youth that I had forgotten.

Dr. Van der Eyck, who introduced me to veterinary medicine, and Dr. Drysdale, who introduced me to veterinary medicine in the United States.

Dr. Hentschl and Dr. Arbaugh, who helped me in my first job.

All my associates through the years who helped build this practice to what it is now.

My wife, Diane, who has stood by me throughout all these crazy years and kept the whole family together, despite all the interruptions that happened all the time.

Our children, Diane Jr., Kathy, and Charles, who are successful in their own businesses and are still a big part in our lives!

All our clients throughout the forty-plus years who let me treat their animals and trusted me that I would do my best for them.

And a big thanks to the clients in these last years for their patience to make this show and book a reality.

Also thanks to David Fisher, who organized all my memories and put them on paper.

  DAVID FISHER

I would like to acknowledge my longtime colleague, Bill Shinker, for his vision in seeing what this book could be; our editor, Brooke Carey, for her extraordinary persistence and guidance under tremendous pressure; and editorial assistant Leslie Hansen for her continued calm and encouragement for helping make make this book a reality.

I am grateful to Charles Pol for . . . well, for everything he has done, which includes . . . everything. It is completely accurate to say that this book would never have happened without him.

I am fortunate enough to have the services of Casson Masters’ Scribecorps. Every nonfiction writer needs a transcription service that can be depended upon completely and is there to do that little extra that makes a writer’s life easier, and that is Scribecorps.

It is the pets of my life that helped make me appreciate the truly incredible Jan and Diane Pol, both the cats and the dogs, but it was Belle who sat with me as I wrote every single word.

In every book I write I acknowledge the assistance of my wife, Laura Stevens, and that is appropriate. Her loving support is the foundation of every page. I am a truly lucky man to have found her.
