Zale had left Morven, but he wouldn’t come near me, for he knew I was being watched. Somehow he now knew Morven was not to be trusted, for I now noticed the significance in Morven’s own words. He had said, “You are lucky Zale saved you from Bolrock the night of the Lathmor attack”. But Bolrock hadn’t attacked me that night. Zale had lied to his master.
In that moment, courage like I had never felt before flowed through me. Zale was out there somewhere believing what I had told him; somehow, he now knew the truth. My hand tightened on the dagger, he had given back me. It was time for me to prepare myself for the end of Morven. I wouldn’t let him go through with his plan. Everything that could be done in my power to stop this would be done. The summer spanned before me, and I knew I had seven weeks. Seven weeks until I turned eighteen and everything would change.
A sly smile reached my lips and I looked out over the ocean, knowing Zale was out there hoping I was missing him. I closed my eyes and when I opened them once more, I turned on my heel to walk back to the house. When I reached the top of the hill I looked back once more at the ocean, knowing I would begin tomorrow to somehow train myself, the way the king had entrusted me to.
And while I thought of the end, that was getting ever closer with each moment, I took a breath and noticed the sunset had changed. Pink streaks no longer filtered over the water. As my hair rippled softly around me, I took in the deep dark color that was spanning over the sky and grasped the newly carved handle of my dagger.
It wasn’t until I turned once more to finish my walk home, I realized the sky had been red.
Blood red.
