The diner was noisy with conversations and a television high on one wall near the main counter was showing a football game. Dan watched the quarterback throw a long ball and the wide receiver picked it out of the air and carried it home for a touchdown and the diner erupted with cheers.

‘Do you want to go somewhere else?’ Dan asked over the noise.

Chloe shook her head. ‘No, this is nice, normal, know what I mean?’

He did and he told her so.

They ordered a plate of barbeque ribs, mashed potatoes, and side orders of mushrooms, onion rings, green beans and two bottles of beer. The food was good and filled them, it was the first decent meal they’d had in days and it made Dan think of something.

‘Can you cook?’ He asked as he sipped his beer.

Chloe studied his face to see if he was joking. ‘What? You expect me to be tied to the kitchen when we’re married?’ Chloe said smiling.

  Dan shook his head.

‘The only thing you’re going to be tied to is the bed, I was just asking, we won’t be able to eat out all the time.’

‘I can put a pizza in the oven if that helps.’

Dan laughed. ‘Good job that I’m pretty damn good in the kitchen then.’

Chloe raised one eyebrow playfully. ‘You can cook?’

‘Of course, I’ve lived on my own for years, I’m a damn fine chef.’

‘Glad one of us is, I’ll make you a deal here and now; you cook the meals and I’ll be your sex slave.’ She smiled as she held her hand out across the table. Dan shook it.

  ‘Deal.’

Chloe said she wanted another beer and Dan caught the eye of their waitress and ordered two more. The diner was slowly clearing out now that the game of football was at half time. Dan looked around but saw that nobody was paying their table any undue attention. Chloe had received quite a few glances since sitting down; her breasts were hard to ignore and the bra she wore only made them even more prominent.

Their beers arrived and they touched bottles and Chloe tipped her bottle to her mouth, a trail of beer ran down the corner of her mouth, across her chin and down her throat and between the slopes of her breasts.

She wiped at her flesh and grinned at Dan.

  ‘Do you want kids?’

Dan was taken aback by the out of context question and shrugged. He wasn’t sure how best to answer. Yes every man should want children, family was important, but Dan had seen how quickly the world was crumbling around him and in all honesty he wasn’t sure if it was morally right to bring more kids in to this world.

‘I don’t know, and that’s the truth. The idea appeals, and they’d be stunning kids with you as a mum, but I’m not sure the world is a good place anymore, I’m not sure what I mean, sorry, I’m not being very helpful am I?’

Chloe smiled. ‘I know what you mean, I do want them and then I don’t at the same time.’

Dan took a swig of beer.

‘How about this, if it happens it happens but we won’t try for them.’

‘I like that idea, that way there won’t be any pressure.’

‘Exactly, I’d hate it if we became like those people who only make love when they’re trying to have a baby.’

Chloe pulled a face, ‘Jesus, that’s a terrible thought. I can promise you this baby, even if I fall pregnant we’ll still fuck as often as possible and if we have kids we’ll still be at it like bunny rabbits, I can guarantee you that kids won’t change that.’

‘Is that right?’ Dan asked playfully.

Chloe sipped her beer and nodded. ‘Yes that’s right.’ And he could see that she meant it.

Dan finished off the last of the ribs and washed it down with a mouthful of beer.

‘When are we leaving? Chloe asked.

‘I could do with a couple of hours of sleep and then I thought we might as well head out later tonight. We’ll head up the eastern seaboard.’

‘When will we get to New York?’

‘Day after tomorrow most probably, we’ll hole up in a hotel for a day and plan our strategy against McCreedy.’

Chloe finished her beer. ‘Sounds like a plan.’

Dan finished his beer and said, ‘Chloe, do you want another one?’

Chloe was looking up at the large television mounted above the counter and Dan turned his gaze up to it to see what had caught Chloe’s attention.

A news broadcast was on and although Dan couldn’t hear what the pretty blonde newsreader was saying he could see the head-and-shoulders shot of Thomas McCreedy. He wondered what was occurring and Dan started to stand up to slip from the booth and get closer to the television to hear what was being said but Chloe reached across the table and put a restraining hand on his arm.

Dan turned to Chloe and she was smiling with delight.

  ‘What happened?’

‘Sit down and I’ll tell you.’

Dan sat back down and Chloe said, ‘I can read her lips.’

‘Oh yeah I forgot you could do that.’

‘McCreedy was shot and killed early this morning.’

‘What?’ Dan said, barely able to keep his voice from being heard by everyone around them. ‘Shot; by whom?’

‘The NYPD don’t have anything to go on, all they’re saying is that an unknown assailant shot McCreedy twice whilst he sat at his desk in his office on Wall Street. They have no clue as to the shooter’s identity and all witness statements match up; the shooter was invited in to McCreedy’s office by McCreedy himself. McCreedy’s receptionist said the man was hard to remember, he just blended in.’

Dan sat back in his seat and rubbed at his eyes.

‘This doesn’t make sense, who’d kill McCreedy?’

‘Well us for one,’ Chloe said with a grin. ‘It could have been anyone; maybe one of the Brotherhood saw an opportunity to take the King’s place.’

Dan shook his head from side to side and said almost in a whisper, ‘I don’t believe it, I mean what are the odds?’

‘Pretty bloody good judging by the fact it’s already happened,’ Chloe said still grinning. ‘We need another beer,’ Chloe caught their waitress’ attention and mimed two more beers. ‘Don’t you get it Dan, it’s over, we’ve accomplished what we’d set out to do.’

Dan sat still, too numb to move and Chloe clicked her fingers to catch his attention.

  ‘Are you okay Dan?’

The waitress brought their beers and when she’d left them alone Dan sat up a little straighter and reached across the tabletop and took Chloe’s hands in his. Chloe could see tears in his eyes and she felt her eyes begin to well up.

‘Can it really be over?’ Dan whispered. ‘What if whoever killed McCreedy knows about us, are we still in danger?’

Chloe shrugged, ‘I don’t know baby but if you think about it; all the major key players are dead, Williams, McCall, Nakatomi and now McCreedy. You told me yourself that the website is no longer functioning, and what if your assumptions are right and those suicides are Brotherhood, I’d say there’s a damn fine chance that it’s over, and if it isn’t and someone does come calling on us we’ll be ready for them.’

Dan nodded. ‘You’re right of course, I just didn’t expect it to end like this, I was preparing myself for having to kill McCreedy and now someone’s done it for me, I’m just a little dumbstruck.’

Chloe raised her beer bottle and Dan lifted his and Chloe said, ‘I propose a toast; to the man who saved us a shitload of hassle in New York.’

Dan smiled and drank his beer.

‘He had to be a professional Chloe; someone paid him to kill McCreedy.’

Chloe agreed. ‘It’s strange though that McCreedy would invite his would-be killer in to his offices; I wonder what that was all about?’

Dan shrugged, ‘I doubt we’ll ever know.’

Chloe began to jump up and down on her seat; little tiny hops of excitement and Dan watched the exposed portions of her breasts move as she jumped about.

  ‘What’s got in to you?

Chloe started to giggle but managed to settle herself; Dan thought she looked like a kid on Christmas morning.

‘Don’t you get it, we can start planning for our life together. Montana, the move, but most importantly our wedding, I’m so excited, I want to get started straight away, oh my God it’s such a good feeling.’

Chloe got to her feet and quickly moved around the table and slipped in next to Dan and before he could stop her she was climbing in to his lap and pressing her body against his and kissing his face over and over and she giggled. ‘Tell me it wasn’t all a joke baby. That now it’s all over we’re still going to do all the things we said we would.’

Dan kissed her and ran his hands up her back and pulled her close. He could see other diners looking at the crazy couple in the booth but he didn’t care; Chloe’s enthusiasm was infectious.

  ‘It’s no joke baby.’

Chloe kissed him and pushed her mouth against his ear and whispered, ‘Take me back to the motel baby; I want to make love to you.’

‘I thought we had to wait until tomorrow?’ Dan chuckled.

‘I think we’ll be fine, but fuck it, it’s worth the risk.’

Dan came out of his sleep with a start; launching himself from the motel’s double bed and he tripped over a chair and wind-milled his arms as he lurched towards consciousness. Chloe heard Dan crash in to the chair and her face was etched with fear as she saw Dan’s sweat drenched naked body in the early morning light spilling through a gap in the curtains.

‘Sweetie!’ Chloe cried as Dan bounced off of the far wall and spun around, sweat flying from his hair, his eyes wide and shockingly white. Chloe got off the bed and began to move towards him, the sheets tangled around her legs.

Dan spun around, she could hear his heavy breathing and he looked like a mad man as he spun around, his eyes searching the shadows but he wasn’t really with her, whatever he was looking at wasn’t in the here and now.

Chloe reached out for him and her hand grabbed his forearm; she could feel the slickness of his sweat in her grip; he was terrified. Sweat splattered across her face and naked breasts as he shook his head from side to side and his sudden jerking movement propelled Chloe sideways across the room, her grip let go and her momentum carried on to the double bed, she bounced across it and crashed off the other side where she fell hard on to her side. Chloe cried out in pain as her right elbow connected squarely with the bedside table. The table wobbled from the force of her impact and the small lamp sitting on top of it fell towards her and smacked in to her head.

‘Fuck!’ Chloe cried as one corner of the lamp’s base connected with her right temple. Chloe managed to scramble to her hands and knees and looked for Dan. She could see him still turning in rapid circles, his eyes still wide and his breathing getting heavier and faster; she knew that he was beginning to hyperventilate.

Chloe got to her feet and rounded the bed, her steps slightly wobbly, and her vision was slightly blurred from the collision with the lamp but she wasn’t worried about herself, she was only concerned for Dan. She braced her right hand on the bed and staggered towards Dan.

Dan lunged backwards and crashed with the bathroom door and Chloe shouted, ‘Dan, what is it? What’s the matter baby, you’re scaring me?’

Her breasts were swinging from side to side as she lunged across the room trying to prevent what was about to occur but she was too late. The bathroom door fell open and Chloe reached for Dan but he was already off balance and falling backwards through the doorway. Chloe watched as he toppled backwards and there was a sickening thud as the back of Dan’s head hit the bathroom floor.

‘Baby!’ Chloe cried, tears brimming in her eyes as she staggered over to him. She pulled the light cord to illuminate the room.

Chloe stepped over him, so that her feet were either side of his chest and she started to crouch down when Dan blinked several times. Chloe could see his eyes begin to focus and his breathing began to slow and then he managed a sad smile and said, ‘I can see right up you from this angle.’

Chloe realised what he was looking at and playfully kicked him in his side. She lowered herself on to his stomach and held his face with her hands. She could feel his breathing through her groin, the steadying rise and fall of his lungs as he got his breathing under control.

‘Baby, what happened? You scared me half to death!’

Dan slowed his breathing and reached his hands up and stroked her upper arms, ‘I don’t know. I just had a bad dream I guess.’

‘Bad dream?’ Chloe said with a slight smile. ‘Fuck me, you were like a banshee, I thought you were going to have a heart attack.’

  ‘Was it that bad?’

‘That bad? You flew out of the bed like someone had stuck a rocket up your ass, you were all over the place, I tried to help but you threw me across the room.’

‘What?’ Dan cried. ‘Did I hurt you? I didn’t mean to hurt you, I’m sorry baby.’

Chloe could see the look of torment in his eyes and she realised that he was terrified that he might have hurt her. Chloe stroked his face. ‘I’m sorry baby, I didn’t mean for it to sound so bad, it was an accident, you didn’t mean to, I’m okay.’

‘You’re sure?’ Dan asked as his hands caressed her shoulders.

Chloe nodded. ‘I banged my elbow and then a lamp hit me in the head, but I’m okay.’

Dan sat up and Chloe was now sitting in his lap and she could feel his soft cock against her pussy lips. Chloe showed him her right elbow, slight bruising could be seen beginning to form. She pointed at it.

  ‘There.’

Dan smiled and kissed her elbow, ‘I’m sorry Chloe.’

Dan looked at her head and saw the lump on her right temple.

‘Let me get you some ice, I don’t remember a thing. I’m sorry,’ Dan whispered.

‘Just kiss it better baby,’ Chloe said quietly.

Dan kissed her temple softly and Chloe squirmed in his lap, her slickness sliding against his softness.

‘And here,’ she said touching her right shoulder.

Dan kissed the spot she indicated.

  ‘Here.’

Dan kissed the side of her neck.

  ‘Here.’

He kissed the base of her throat.

  ‘Here.’

Dan laughed. ‘You hurt your right breast?’

  ‘Absolutely.’

Dan kissed the spot her finger rested against.

  ‘Here.’

  ‘You banged your left nipple?’

Chloe laughed. ‘Absolutely and it hurt like a son-of-a-bitch.’ She could feel him growing beneath her. ‘That spot hurts the most; it may require lots of attention to make the pain go away.’

  ‘Is that right?’

‘Uh huh,’ Chloe breathed as Dan’s lips slipped over her hardening nipple.

Chloe finished getting dressed, and started on her make-up. Dan stepped out of the bathroom and crossed to the open hold-all on the bed and found some clean underwear. He slipped in to a pair of boxer shorts and said, ‘I won’t miss living out of bags, I know that much.’

Chloe nodded as she applied eye-shadow. ‘It’ll be nice to have everything hanging in a wardrobe.’

‘We’ll build you the nicest closet going.’

‘It’ll have to be big; once we’re able I intend to make use of your vast wealth to buy lots of new clothes.’

‘I see, you’re just with me for my money,’ Dan replied laughing.

Chloe shook her head, ‘I’d love you if you were a tramp, but if you want me to look the shit every day I’ll need the wardrobe for it. That dress you like so much, I’ll buy two dozen, and then there are shoes, lingerie, short skirts, tight tops...’

Dan laughed and cut her off, ‘I give in, just stop, you’re making me hard again.’

  Chloe laughed. ‘How’s your head?’

‘I’ve got a bastard of a headache, what about you?’

‘Snap.’ She showed him the side of her face.
<
br />   ‘Ouch!’ Dan said. She had a bump the size of a walnut on her temple. ‘I’m really sorry Chloe.’

Chloe laughed. ‘I’ll cover it with make-up, and stop apologising; you’ve already said you’re sorry about a hundred times.’

Dan pulled on a black sweater, ‘I don’t know what I was dreaming about, how fucked up am I to wake up like that?’

Chloe turned in the chair to face him. ‘You’ll be fine, together, we’ll be fine, all of this will be a distant memory; it’s all over now.’

Dan nodded as he pulled on his jeans but a part of him wondered if it would ever be over, an organisation like the Brotherhood might hold a grudge for years. There was nothing he could do about that for now so he would do like Chloe had said the night before and look forward to the future that they would build together.

Chloe finished with her make-up and stood up and said to Dan, ‘Well?’

  ‘Stunning.’

She looked amazing wearing a tight silk blouse, short black skirt and high heels. She pulled the hem of her skirt up her thighs and just as he’d hoped she was wearing hold-up stockings.

‘I’ll never get bored of the way you dress.’

Chloe grinned at him, ‘I don’t think I’ll ever get bored dressing to please you.’

They kissed and before it could go too far Chloe stepped back and smoothed out her skirt.

  ‘What time is our flight?’

  ‘Two thirty.’

  Cambridge, ENGLAND.

  One month later...

‘Do you Chloe Sophie Bishop take Daniel Constantine to be your lawful wedded husband?’

  ‘I do.’

‘And do you Daniel Constantine take Chloe Sophie Bishop to be your lawful wedded wife?’

  ‘I do.’

‘Then by the powers invested in me I now pronounce you to be husband and wife.’

  Later that night...

  ‘Man I’m so tired.’

  ‘Me too husband.’

‘Do you want to go to sleep?’

‘Screw that, it’s our wedding night and you’re going to make love to me.’
