‘Up there on the ranch son, only six foot of snow will stop this baby,’ Bryson had said with a large grin.

Chloe had stayed in the Volvo, she had no interest in trucks, but she did enjoy looking at Dan’s ass as he walked around the car-lot with the dealership’s owner.

The Ford had a V12 engine, with a cable winch in the rear bed and had a ground clearance of three feet. Dan knew that it was the right vehicle for the jobs he had planned but he still felt out of place as he drove through Rockspur back to their guest cottage.

He parked up and climbed out and Chloe got down out of the Volvo. She put her hands behind his head and kissed him. The two vehicles sandwiched their bodies so Dan felt it safe to slip his hands beneath her dress and grab her buttocks. His fingers slid down her crack and he could feel her wetness against his fingertips.

‘Take me to bed cowboy,’ Chloe said and laughed as he chased her up the small paved pathway to their cottage.

‘We’ve got a couple of hours before we need to go to the store,’ Dan said as he buckled his belt.

Chloe was on her back, her legs high over her head and she ran her hands down her thighs.

‘Stubble; I need a bath, I have to shave them.’

‘Let your pubic hair grow back.’

Chloe squeezed her breasts together and smiled at him, ‘Dan, you’re not bored of it already?’

Dan stepped up to the bed and grabbed her feet. He rubbed his thumbs in to the balls of her feet and Chloe moaned. ‘Is there no end to your talents? That feels so good.’

‘I just fancy running my tongue through your pubic thatch, don’t ask me why.’

Chloe laughed. ‘I’ll let it grow then. Where are you off to?’

‘Figured I’d track down a sporting goods store, we need to arm up.’

‘You think they’re still out there; the Brotherhood?’

Dan said he didn’t. ‘I just want to be prepared for any eventuality.’

Chloe agreed. She got up off the bed, ‘I’ll take a bath and get ready for this evening.’

‘Don’t forget we have to go to Harry’s first.’

‘Shoot!’ Chloe said. ‘Fuck it, he’ll just have to control his lust, I’m going to look so fucking sexy tonight Dan, you’re going to be all over me.’

Dan laughed, ‘I think I did that a minute ago.’

Chloe kissed his mouth and bit his lip playfully. ‘I’ll even wear underwear.’

Chloe passed him and Dan slapped her naked ass as she slipped by.

  ‘Ouch,’ she said and laughed.

Over the summer they were very busy. They moved in to the ranch house on the Monday. Barnie began work on the extension the following day and over the following weeks Dan and Chloe got to know him very well and decided that they liked him and trusted him. Dan worked on the fences bordering their expansive property and employed Barnie’s nephew Sam to help him mend all the fencing and posts. It was back breaking work but when he collapsed each night he felt good and Chloe helped to relax him with various sexual acts.

When he was working outside Chloe would spend her hours decorating; she’d refused his suggestion of getting in a decorating team, she wanted to do everything. She sanded the floors back to their natural colour and clear-varnished the floors.

‘We’re not having carpets,’ she had told Dan. ‘I hate carpets.’

Dan would often see her driving in to the town to buy more paint as he was out mending and fixing with Sam. A month passed and Dan had finally finished mending the fences; he paid Sam and waved the kid goodbye.

Dan would sit for hours some days and just watch Barnie working on the extension that they were now all calling the “lighthouse”.

Chloe finished the upstairs rooms that same week and would sit with Dan on the porch, her feet in his lap as he massaged them, the price of this little treat, she had to sit facing him so that he could ogle her whenever he liked, they both agreed that that was a fair trade.

They drove down to the city the first weekend after they had moved in and visited a large home furnishings store where they spent hours choosing a bed (the biggest that Chloe could find), bedroom furniture, sofas, chairs, bookcases, other beds for the guest rooms, rugs, the list was endless. At first Chloe would keep asking if they could afford it. The bed alone cost eight thousand dollars and Chloe had almost collapsed until Dan told her if that’s the one she wanted then that’s the one they’d get. Chloe’s continued questioning of whether they could afford everything led to a conversation over coffees.

‘Baby, we’ve spent a fortune in that store, even with the massive discount they gave us, I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone kiss ass so much as that goober in there.’ She was of course referring to the smarmy salesman whose attitude quickly went from condescending to subservient once it was clear money was no object. It reminded Dan of a scene from the old classic film “Pretty Woman”.

‘We’ve not really talked about money have we?’ Dan asked and Chloe shook her head and sipped her coffee.

  ‘I know we’ve got a bit but...’

Dan laughed and then reached across the table and linked his fingers with hers.

‘Honey, we sold the house and land in Norfolk for three million.’

‘I know, but the ranch took a third of that and then there’s everything else.’

‘Baby, shush, listen; the flat in Hertford went for eight hundred thousand, I already had close to six million in the bank, I cashed in on other investments, trust me baby, with the interest we’re getting on that lot you can shop ‘til you drop.’

  ‘I had no idea.’

Dan drank his coffee and grinned; ‘Besides there’s always Nakatomi’s money if we need it.’

Chloe realised what he was referring to and said, ‘I thought you made that disappear, the hydra right?’

‘Nothing ever truly disappears; it’s out there if we choose to use it.’

  ‘How much?’

  ‘About three hundred million dollars.’

Chloe choked on her coffee and liquid spewed from her mouth and nostrils and she laughed as Dan handed her some napkins. Other people in the coffee shop were looking and Chloe giggled as she patted at her cleavage. Once again, as she’d promised him, she’d worn one of the cashmere dresses that Dan loved to see her in; this one was a light pink, the shade repeated in her four inch heels.

  ‘That much?’ Chloe whispered.

‘We’ll never run out of money, but I’ve been thinking that it might be good to use some of Nakatomi’s to help others; charities and such, people we know, what do you think?’

Chloe got to her feet and leant over the table; her dress open at the throat giving Dan ample view of her bare breasts beneath. She kissed him and said, ‘I think that would be a great idea, do some good out of the sick fuck’s ways.’

Dan nodded, kissed her, and looked longingly at her nipples before she sat back down.

‘Are you ready for another round of shopping?’

‘We’re going to have a great life together baby,’ Chloe said. ‘Our home is going to be perfect.’

Chloe finished decorating the house the last week of their first July in their new home. The only thing she hadn’t done herself was the outfitting of the large kitchen, they’d employed a friend of Barnie’s in Rockspur to build them a kitchen; dark oak with black marble counters and a fridge so big that Chloe joked you could rent it out to a family of four.

Each room was decorated a different colour, no wallpaper, just paint, and varnished wooden floors. Each room was furnished in a different style and Dan said it was all wonderful and they’d spent a week christening each room, and by the end of that week they were both sore, there were a lot of rooms.

The extension was on schedule, the sub-contractor that Barnie had employed was a good solid worker, huge sheets of yellow tarpaulin covered most of the work being done and when Chloe had suggested that they take a look inside Dan had said they could but that he’d rather wait until it was all completed
and Chloe had agreed, it would be good to step in to it when it was finished and ready to be decorated.

The same week that she finished decorating the main house they visited a horse ranch to the north and they picked out a half dozen animals that they liked. The breeder had them delivered. Dan and Chloe bought all the relevant equipment, feeds, saddles and such like and when the horses were let loose in to the pastures of their new home Dan and Chloe watched the horses the rest of that afternoon.

They took on a part time stable-hand, a young woman that Chloe had met in town, her name was Rosie, and although she was shy and hardly spoke a word unless asked to it was clear to see that she had a knack with horses and Rosie would come out to the ranch three afternoons a week. Rosie introduced them to the best equine vet in the state and a farrier who would take care of shoeing the horses when needed.

The first week of August, on a boiling hot Wednesday Dan was sat on the porch, sipping coffee and looking at the horse in the pasture. Chloe stepped out on to the porch and Dan tilted his head up at her and smiled as he looked at her.

‘You’ll give old Barnie a heart attack honey dressed like that, he’s damn nigh finished so I don’t want him being carted off to the mortuary.’

Chloe leaned over Dan and slid her arms down his chest beneath his tee-shirt. She could feel the muscles of his torso; he had grown strong again since moving to Montana. Chloe’s breasts, clothed in his favourite black crocheted bikini top pressed against his head. Dan reached his right hand around the chair he was sat in and his hand ran up her right thigh and he slipped his fingers beneath the frayed ends of her denim shorts and slid across one bare buttock.

‘How are you this morning Mrs Constantine?’

Chloe smiled and kissed his forehead and squeezed his sides. It had become a daily ritual, his greeting her as Mrs Constantine, she’d made him; she so loved to hear him say it.

‘I’m fine handsome husband of mine, I just got off the phone to mum, and she’s so excited about Christmas.’

  ‘How’s Ron?’

  ‘Just loving the Aston Martin.’

Dan had given Ron his Aston Martin before leaving, Ron had cried and hugged Dan and told him that he was proud that Dan had married his daughter. ‘You’re the best man I know son,’ Ron had said which had brought a tear to Dan’s eye. He’d never known his father and getting to know Ron had shown him what he had missed as a child.

‘What are your plans today sexy?’ Dan asked.

Chloe moved around the chair and took Dan’s coffee and sat in his lap and sipped at the strong brew; this was another of their rituals, she always drank from his mug. Dan figured most couples had their little ways and rituals. It was the small things like this that Dan cherished most.

Chloe lifted Dan’s left hand and slid his hand beneath the cup of her right breast and leaned back in to Dan as she sipped his coffee and watched the horses at play.

‘I thought I’d drive in to town and pop in to Sherry’s, she rang yesterday to say that the lingerie I had ordered was in.’

Chloe had quickly made friends with the two ladies that ran the two clothing boutiques in Rockspur. Chloe could have ordered it direct over the internet but she liked the fact that they shopped in town; that they supported the local businesses and they were quickly making friends in the town and the people “appreciated that the new people up at the ranch shopped local.” She had heard that spoken so many times Dan and Chloe now laughed about it.

‘Just make sure you wear a little more than what you’ve currently got on.’

‘Of course,’ Chloe said playing along, ‘I only want my husband seeing the merchandise, why old Harry would have a fit. I think he’s still recovering from my first trip to his store.’

Dan laughed, ‘I think a lot of folks are still recovering from that day and night.’

Chloe passed the mug to Dan who took a sip and passed it back to Chloe.

Dan’s hand caressed her breast and he squeezed her nipple between his fingers and said, ‘I hope you’ve got time for a quickie before you go.’

Chloe grinned, ‘I thought you had your fill first thing?’

‘I’m beginning to feel able again.’

Chloe pushed her ass back in to his groin, feeling his hardness. ‘So I see.’

Dan’s other hand slipped inside the other cup of her bikini and Chloe sighed and said, ‘I like these early mornings.’

‘Me too,’ Dan said as he began to kiss her neck. They could hear Barnie hammering away in the lighthouse so they knew they would be safe and unseen. Chloe began to unbutton her short denim shorts and then said, ‘Dan, you’ll have to take a rain cheque.’

  ‘Why’s that?’

‘Your present’s coming up the road.’

Chloe freed herself from Dan’s hold and adjusted her bikini top and buttoned her shorts.

‘What?’ Dan asked as he got to his feet and stood beside Chloe on the porch steps. He looked down the long gravel road that led out to the highway. A truck was moving towards them at a steady pace and Dan could see a horse-box was being towed along behind the truck.

‘What’s going on?’ Dan asked Chloe, he put his arm around her waist and she wiggled her hips.

‘Sorry,’ Dan said, ‘I forgot,’ he moved his hand back across her lower back and pushed his hand beneath the waistband of her shorts and his hand held Chloe’s right buttock.

‘That’s more like it,’ she said with a smile. ‘I’ll get you trained yet.’

Chloe put her arm around Dan’s waist and nestled her head against his upper arm.

‘What have you been up to Chloe, I knew giving you your own credit card would be a disaster?’

Chloe bumped her hip against his. ‘You’ll like this Dan, I know you will.’

The truck reached the turn-around in front of the ranch house’s main steps and the driver cut the engine and a man got out and approached them.

  ‘Daniel Constantine?’

‘Yeah,’ Dan said, he didn’t know what was going on.

‘Delivery for you; would have been here a little earlier but traffic was building up back in Rockspur.’

  ‘Okay,’ Dan said.

The driver walked around to the rear of the horse box and opened the gates and lowered the ramp and stepped inside.

Chloe took Dan’s hand from her shorts and led him towards the horse box.

‘We’ve got horses Chloe,’ Dan whispered.

Chloe nodded. ‘Not like this one baby, this one’s special.’

The man reappeared and led the dappled grey horse down the ramp and handed the head rope to Dan. The horse butted his head against Dan’s chest and Dan laughed. Chloe signed some paperwork and handed the clipboard back to the driver.

‘Hello Weiser,’ he whispered in to the animal’s ear. He smoothed the horse’s face and turned to Chloe. She had tears in her eyes and said, ‘I had to get him over here for you, I saw the look on your face when we took off in the desert, it was like you were leaving a loved one.’

  Chloe smoothed down Weiser’s shoulder.

The man closed up the horse-box and got back in to the truck. He rolled the window down and said to Dan, ‘I’ve seen a lot of good horses over the years and he’s one of them.’ The man started the truck. ‘Y’all have a good day.’

The truck turned and started back down the road towards the highway.

Dan turned to Chloe, Weiser butted Dan in the back and Dan swept Chloe off her feet and kissed her. Chloe was laughing, ‘I told you you’d like it.’

‘I love it baby, but how did you organise it?’

‘We’ve got Chrissy’s number, a couple of calls, a price agreed. Quarantine was a bitch but the rest was easy.’

Dan kissed her again and Chloe slipped out of his arms and walked around Weiser, rubbing him along the sides. She stopped next to Dan again and said, ‘I know what you’ll be doing while I’m in town.’

‘Thank you Chloe, this is the sweetest thing anyone’s ever done for me.’<

  ‘Call it an anniversary present.’

Their first year wedding anniversary was at the end of the month. Dan was hoping that his gift for Chloe would be ready in time.

  ‘Thank you.’

‘You are most welcome, well I’ll leave you to get reacquainted with your old friend, I’m gonna change before heading in to town, do you want anything?’

  ‘No, I’m fine.’

Chloe kissed him again, teasing him with her tongue and then skipped up the porch steps and in through the open front door.

Dan turned to Weiser and stroked the horse’s muzzle.

‘What do you say friend, shall we let it buck?’

Weiser snorted and shook his head.

Dan laughed, ‘I thought you’d say that.’

Dan swung himself up in to the saddle; he patted Weiser’s neck and ran his hands through the horse’s mane. Dan, for the first time since killing Terry, began to feel the hold that Terry’s death held over him begin to slacken. Killing Terry had been necessary but the man was still his brother and unless put in that situation Dan doubted that anyone would understand just how hollowing of a man’s soul something like that was.

Dan walked Weiser out through the stable doors and trotted down past the main ranch house. He stopped at the lighthouse and called out to Barnie. The carpenter poked his head out through a gap in the plastic and waved down at Dan.

‘How’s it looking Bar?’ Dan called up.

Barnie grinned, ‘I think we’ll complete on time, the electrics are going in tomorrow and the windows will go in on Saturday, Sunday I’ll take care of the tricky bits, couple of guys I’ve worked with before from Rockspur will help out at the weekend.’

‘I really appreciate it Bar, if you need any more money let me know.’

Barnie shook his head. ‘All taken care of, folks in town have really warmed to you two, people talk about you all the time.’

‘Is that right?’ Dan laughed. ‘What have they been saying?’

Barnie laughed and wiped at his sweaty brow. ‘How y’all shop local, that means a lot to folks round these parts. A lot of the old timers like the way you haven’t used barbed wire up here, and the guys at Tull’s Place remember that night in the bar, you’ve made a lot of friends round these parts and quick too. Don’t lock yourselves away up here, I’ve lived in town my whole life, it’s a good town, with good people.’
