Spahis Light cavalry regiments of the French army recruited primarily from the indigenous populations of Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco. The modern French army retains one regiment of Spahis as an armored unit, with personnel now recruited in mainland France.
Tharaud brothers These brothers, Jérôme (1874–1953) and Jean (1877–1952), were first known as travel writers. They were also the authors of numerous “colonial” novels and reminiscences. Both were elected to the French Academy—Jérôme in 1938, Jean in 1946.
thé dansant Tea dance, a summer or autumn afternoon or early evening gathering from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., sometimes preceded in the English countryside by a garden party. The function evolved from the concept of afternoon tea.
