CHAPTER 1
ARRIVAL
The sweltering, Texas heat had been beating down all day on the city of San Marco. Yet the humidity and high temperature couldn’t stop Suzy from crawling under the covers. It didn’t matter what the weather was, the weight and the comfort that bed brought her was immeasurable. She now laid cosied up with the ceiling fan circling overhead and her pet cat Mocha at her feet. She readied herself for a quiet evening of reading her favorite author while nibbling on a box of chocolates.
Mocha was purring happily against her shins and she reached out to scratch her head.
“Yeah it’s just you and me again. Mommy and Mocha!” she was certain she saw the little Burmese cat smile.
Soon enough she thought it was time for little Mocha to make a move so she could have some alone time. She nudged the cat with her toes.
“Hey… time for you to get outta here,” And the cat begrudgingly rolled off the bed and walked away.
Suzy loved this time she had alone and she’d been looking forward to the moment all day when she could pull her favorite romance book out from under her pillow. She slid her hand out to reach it and flicked through to the final chapter. As she began reading she felt the desperate need to lower a hand down under her night gown. She was after all reading her favorite alpha male story and nothing excited her more than the idea of a great, big hunk with a heart as big as his biceps. After a few minutes she felt that she didn’t need the book anymore and she let it tumble gently to the floor.
She pulled the covers up over her head and let herself drift into her mind. Her fantasy was always the same. A strong cowboy would rescue her from an array of catastrophes and she’d feel so indebted to him that she’d give her body to him eagerly. He’d take her wherever she stood and grip her hard as he showed her who was boss.
Letting her dreams take her away Suzy slid a hand under her underwear and felt excited at her own wetness. She was slick beneath her fingers and she swelled underneath her own touch. Letting out a tiny gasp of pleasure as she pushed a finger inside, she felt immediate pleasure and she grinded into her hand. Quickly she felt that she would climax and began to brush her fingers up and down over her clitoris. Soon she was moaning loudly and she bit into the covers as orgasm approached. Her gasps were now quicker and she clenched her eyes tight as her wetness grew so much she was covering her own hand. She then moved her hand as quickly as she could and as she pressed herself into it she came with a violent shudder. At last she was satisfied. It had been one of the hardest orgasms she’d ever had and it took her a moment to regain her breath and open her eyes.
Still lying beneath the covers she breathed deeply as she recovered…But then a noise! What is that? She was flustered and wide awake again. Then she realized that the jaunty tune that was playing from the pocket in her work pants came from her cell phone. She grumpily crawled down to the bottom of the bed and pulled the pants up from the floor. She answered the phone without bothering to hide her annoyance.
“Yuh?”
“It’s me, John?”
“I can see that? Why are you calling me so late?”
“Sorry it’s just that… they arrived!”
Suzy knew exactly who they were but she was in denial, she didn’t want her anxieties to be confirmed.
“Who arrived?” she asked hoping that she’d hear a different answer.
“The loggers ma’am! Clarkson’s men!”
She was already pulling on her pants while trying to find her car keys.
“I’m on my way!” she shouted into the phone. “Wait for me,”
And she was out the door.

When she arrived at the edge of San Angelo Country Park she could see the big industrial lights in the distance.
“The bastards,” she muttered under her breath as she drove her pickup truck through the trees.
She soon noticed her colleague’s truck and braked as he jumped out.
“Jonny kid, please don’t tell me it’s happening. The town council voted against it didn’t they?”
“As far as I know they did yeah,” the young man with the beginnings of a fluffy, blonde beard rubbed a hand through his hair nervously. “But I guess that don’t mean nothin’ when you’re rich,”
“I guess not,” Suzy frowned and caught sight of herself in the nearby wing mirror.
She looked tired and frazzled and could see dark, puffy circles beneath her eyes. But tiredness wouldn’t stop her tonight, she was on a mission.
“Well what do we do?” John asked while picking at his nails. “We can’t just confront them can we?”
“Sure as hell we can!” she was annoyed at his lack of confidence but then she softened when she caught sight of the young man’s big brown eyes. “WE can do it kid, TOGETHER. You’re a big strong forest ranger now remember?”
Johnny nodded. “Yeah… You always know how to put me straight,” and he grinned.
There was silence in the dusty air for a minute as they both readied themselves. Then their eyes met and they nodded to each other in agreement before Suzy flung open the door and climbed back into her truck.
“Race you up there!” she laughed as she sped off.
John was right behind her with terror in his eyes. He didn’t sign up for this! He just wanted to care for the animals and look after the trees. He just wanted to be alone in nature like when he was a child… but here he was now, on the hot pursuit of a crazy lady as she sped into the woods to fight a billionaire. But each day with Suzy was never boring and he thought back to all the years he had known her and he smiled.
He remembered the first time he saw her. She was all curves and laughter with died pink hair and lips to match. She had just turned sixteen when she was asked to babysit him and his little sister and when she arrived his parents nearly sent her home. He remembered the way she che
wed and popped her gum with a smirk on her face and the way she swaggered into his bedroom and threw herself on the bed.
“That Mortal Kombat?” she asked as she nodded to the television. “Gimme a go,” and she yanked the controller from the little boy’s hands.
The evening had passed quickly as they competed against one another and soon the two were friends despite the ten year age gap. He had looked up to her like a big sister ever since and she’d always looked out for him. He’d follow her into the bowels of Hell if she’d asked him to and tonight he was almost doing that.
It had been years since the start of the logging debacle. The city of San Marco backed onto the edge of the most beautiful country park. It had been adored and cultivated for centuries by the locals but then Kenneth Clarkson had moved in and he wanted things his way and he wanted it all teared down.
The community of course had been at war with him and the protest was led by no other than Suzy herself. She was a fierce environmentalist with a positive attitude and fire in her belly. She had done well to stave off the loggers this long but finally it looked as though she had lost her battle.
But you wouldn’t have noticed were you to look at her. She was driving up the dusty slopes with a gritty determination and the wind blowing in her colourful hair. Soon enough she reached the top of the hill where the loggers were preparing their equipment and John was close behind. As she jumped out her truck he stuck to her like a shadow.
“Clarkson! Where’s that Clarkson?” she bellowed.
The loggers all looked to her with amusement in their eyes but she wasn’t laughing.
“Yo! You dumb bastards! Ken---neth Clark---son… He’s here right?” she spat the words out slowly.
“Yeah … I’m here,” the old man strode out from between his men with a crooked smile on his face. “Why it’s our favorite little tree hugger right here,” he chortled. “You’re too late to save the day. You know that don’t you? And anyway… trees don’t belong in the desert. This ain’t exactly Yellowstone,” he laughed to himself.
“You can swagger over here and try and belittle me Clarkson but I ain’t leavin’ til you tell your men to stop,”
But it was too late and the loud buzzing of the chainsaws drowned out her voice. She was instantly enraged and looked to the old man with pure hatred in her eyes.
“STOP!” she screamed.
But he pretended to not see or hear her. Clarkson looked to the skinny young man standing faithfully at Suzy’s side and laughed.
“This your sidekick?” he poked fun during a temporary lull in the ruckus.
The forest rangers just glared at him.
“Well you Fatman can take your little Robin and skedaddle outta here,” and he waved his hands dismissively.
Suzy could feel a hot temper rise up from inside her and she was ready to fight. But what exactly could she do? Chain herself to a tree? Throw herself in front of a chainsaw? It was useless trying to do it alone and she huffed as she walked back to her truck. She’d lost and she traced her fingers across the trees emblazoned on the side of her vehicle with a heavy heart. The Texas Wildlife Foundation had meant the world to her. It wasn’t just a job it was a passion. She always got to work early and was seldom first to leave. She adored the wilderness and everything that encompassed it from the animals to the sound of the water as it trickled over rocks. And she felt that she was actually making a difference in a world that was so technology rich and compassion poor.
She took one last look at Clarkson over her shoulder and saw that he’d already forgotten about her. Putting her key in the ignition she pulled away slowly and descended the rocky slope with a feeling that she had failed. She looked in the rear view mirror and saw John’s face. He’s so sweet, she thought. But I’ve let him down too. But then she looked back into the mirror and saw that he was trying to get her attention. He gave her a thumbs up with a smile and blew her a kiss.
“Yeah, a real sweet kid,” she whispered to no one in particular.
CHAPTER 2
MARGARITA
Suzy looked to her phone for the time and saw that it was nearly midnight. She pulled into the driveway of the little two story house on the edge of town and hoped that she hadn’t woken her mother. But as she opened the door she realized that she had.
“What’s up pumpkin?” the little old lady was standing in the doorway wearing nothing but a thin nightgown and slippers.
“Oh nothing ma, just needed to see ya,” and she walked over and wrapped her arms around her mother. “I miss your hugs you know that?”
“Goodness’ sake Suzanna! It’s only been two days!” and the old lady laughed. “You need to get out more,” and she ushered her daughter inside.
“I get out all the time ma! Remember my office is the great outdoors!”
They both giggled and her mother wrapped a shawl around herself.
“You want some sugar cookies sweetheart?” her mother asked kindly.
“Always! My favorite,”
“I know they are pumpkin,” and she placed a plateful down on the kitchen table.
Suzy immediately tucked in and began to chew noisily as she savoured every sweet bite.
“So….” her mother began with her usual prodding. “What’s the matter? You look so tired,” and she placed an arm around Suzy.
“They’ve started ma! The loggers!”
“Never!” the old lady gasped and clutched her chest. “The town council voted against it!”
“That’s what I thought,” Suzy began flicking crumbs around the plate.
The old lady frowned and thought about what her husband would do if he were still alive. He was a good, strong man with a heart of gold and an iron will. He always knew how to cheer up the kids and made sure they never had a problem in their life. But Margarita had never been so good at taking charge.
She looked behind at her husband’s photo that sat in a silver frame by the telephone. He looked so handsome at that age, so alert and full of life. And she thought sadly to his final months when the cancer had riddled his body and left him stagnant in that hospital bed. He had moved with Margarita to Texas nearly forty years ago soon after they were married and their life had been so blessed. Saying goodbye to Mexico was hard on the young couple at first but they made it work and soon two babies arrived and their family was complete. They were living the American Dream and making money. They had friends who adored them and children who were healthy. That’s why it had been so hard when he passed, they had never known what hardship was until then. Suzy especially had suffered after his passing and Margarita looked to her now with softness in her eyes.
“Anything to make you happy sweetheart… Just tell me what to do,”
“Just hug me ma,” and the women hugged in the dim light of the kitchen.
CHAPTER 3
ALLIES
The sun was streaming in through the high plated glass into the Sheriff’s office. It was the third time this month that he’d had Suzy in screaming at him and bouncing all over the front of his desk. As per usual all he could do was let her have her say and take a deep breath.
“But we voted against it! That Clarkson can’t just come on down and take over the park can he? It’s protected land ain’t it?”
“Look…how long have we known each other? A long time? So I know that you know what’s he’s doin’ ain’t right. And you know that I know it’s damn right illegal. But he’s a God damn billionaire and I hate to say it but that means he owns this town…in one way or another,”
“But that ain’t right sheriff! It’s just wrong! Money don’t mean you can do whatever you please to God’s Earth! I’ve spent the last ten years caring for those animals and for the land! I love that park Sheriff and I just can’t let this happen,”
“But what do you want ME to do? March down there and arrest every logger and digger?” he leaned back and laughed but he had sad eyes. “I don’t mean to be a smart ass Suzy but this isn’t as easy as it should be. Money AL
WAYS makes things complicated,”
Suzy sighed and felt the sun on her cheeks. She should be enjoying the heat outside but here she was arguing her same point over and over in a futile attempt to save her little patch of heaven.
“I know that you can’t stop them…. But I wish someone could” She took a deep breath.
“Yeah… and they’ve started choppin’ anyway,” that nervous laugh again and he looked to the floor.
“How bad is the damage? How much have they cleared?” her eyes were wide in anticipation.
“I couldn’t say…” the Sheriff lied. He couldn’t bear to tell her the truth.
A heavy silence hung low in the warmth of the room.
“Well I better get back out there anyway. There’s the rest of the park that needs taken care of,” and she stood up to leave.
She was halfway out the door when Sheriff Watson was hit by a lightning bolt of an idea.
“Hey!” he called after her. “Come back’ ere,”
“A change of heart?” she asked sarcastically.
He eyed her carefully. He didn’t much like being on the receiving end of humour.
“Look, sometimes the law ain’t the only place you can turn,” he started to rummage in a drawer in his desk with a serious look on his face.
Suzy looked at him perplexed. “I hope you ain’t saying we have to ask for help from the Girl Scouts…” she spoke rather caustically.
“Don’t sass me woman,” he smirked as he found what he was looking for.
He pulled a business card from the drawer and presented it to her.
“Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire… or a billionaire with another billionaire,” he smiled at his own pun and leaned back in his seat.
“And what exactly am I supposed to do with this?” she seemed angry.
“These two fellas have been fightin’ over Texas land for nearly decades. Pure rivals they are. If anyone wants to take land back from Clarkson it’ll be this man,” the sheriff leaned over and tapped the business card in Suzy’s hand. “Yup… those two are always suing each other over somethin’,” he grinned.
