“Ready for that selfie now?” Parker clasps my hands in his and pulls me to standing. His arm wraps around my front, and he kisses my cheek when he snaps the shot. All of Santa Fe is in the background, but all I can focus on is the blissed-out look still on my face.

“I think this is my favorite one yet,” Parker says proudly.

He settles his helmet back on top of his head, leaving the bandana in place, and sets off for the downhill ride of our lives.

“Wait for me, Dimples,” I call, trying not to wince as I sit back on my bike. I probably should have thought this one through a little more.

Parker stops and turns back to me. “I don’t have dimples.”

My shit-eating grin and eyebrow waggle turn his confused look into one of pure “Why do I put up with you again?”

“Because you love me,” I say in answer to his unspoken question, riding past him and blowing him a kiss. “And I love you.”

Santa Fe might not be the world, but I’ve got big plans for my love. And one day soon, I’m going to gift him with it all.

  Acknowledgments

To my LesCourt ladies, Leslie Copeland and Courtney Bassett: I truly cannot overstate the impact you both have had on me. Neither of you signed up to be life coach as well as beta reader/proofer/editor, but you have helped my books, my writing, and my confidence grow as a result of your professional expertise and your friendship. I hope I always have you on my team!

Thank you, Garrett Leigh, for bringing Mal to life. Before I was even a quarter of the way into the writing, you presented me with a picture of a person who looked like they could stare down a tiger and win, and everything about Mal clicked into place.

A special thanks to the Seattle Nonbinary Collective. I attended Gender Odyssey, a conference for transgender and gender diverse people, this summer and it was during one of your sessions that Mal was born. Thank you to those that shared your inspiring stories. You are some of the most courageous and beautiful people I’ve ever met.

It is estimated that nearly 44 million people worldwide have Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. If someone you love has the disease, Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) and Alzheimer’s Disease International (www.alz.co.uk) have resources and support to help.

  About the Author

JD Chambers wanted at various times to be Indiana Jones, Pat Benatar, and Wonder Woman when she grew up. She never considered writing down the stories she crafted in her head. They provided nothing more than entertainment for long drives or sleepless nights, until one particular story insisted it didn’t want to reside only in her noggin. She hasn’t stopped writing since.

JD finds unlikely heroes, humans courageous enough to be themselves, and spreadsheets incredibly sexy -- the last one much to her husband’s chagrin. Together, they raise three teenagers and the world’s most mellow Chihuahua on the Oregon Coast.
